LUMP LANE UPDATE

Here's the big pile regrind asphalt ready for use

Here's what the railroad rights of way looks like after the rails have been removed.

In early Oct., the Business Development Authority (BDA) Chair announced a big change in the Elk River Trail System (ERTS) State Park. Up until that Oct. meeting , the public had been told, there would be  a smooth as silk, hiking biking surface for the long skinny trail. During the Oct. 14th BDA meeting, the Chair advanced, instead of removing the rails and ties and then smoothing out the ballast, the ties would be left in place and then covered over with gravel.  We know of no other rails to trails path in this state where the ties have been left in place.
As soon as the Chair's words were made public, everything went to H. True the promised gravel, even if 12 inches thick,  may look good for a short while BUT, as it settles in and the rotting ties are visible again, it could be nothing more than an unusable Lump Lane as we named the thang.
Instead of a great tourism draw perfect for even horseback rides or pulling a buggy, that great future was dashed. Clayberry had gotten screwed again.
We based our many comments and write ups on what was made public on Oct. 14th  with a follow up on Oct. 23rd during the County Commission meeting..

Just down from Duck, W Va, here's two examples of what the dumped and spread regrind asphalt looks like

Here's a stretch of the trail with an easement road still in place

On Oct. 27th, we made it to Duck and took a looksee of Lump Lane. Here's what you see. We don't know if the ties have been left in place or removed. If the ties are left in place, there are no visible sign of em, not even along the edge. As a matter of fact, with many inches of regrind in place, the trail looks almost ready for use.
As for the Ace Cub Reporter's comments (Lump Lane for instance), he may have been wro,,,,, wroooo,,,, wrong.  Darn that's hard to say.
In the way of an update, the regrind is in place well beyond Bev Nichol's home.
Further down trail, at Groves Creek, construction equipment is on site. It looks like that rr bridge has been rehabed with wooden guard rails in place.
Right now things look much better than the lumpy lane that we've been predicting.                  AW
