For
the last several election cycles, there haven't been many in the way of
new faces, candidates, on the ballot. We've had some years, other than
incumbent politicians, there have been no new faces to vote for. That's
changing this year.
Saturday
Jan 25th was the last day to register to run for elected office in this
State for 2020. The County Clerk's office in the Courthouse was open for
half a day to accommodate in person sign ups.
Lo Nutter was one of the Saturday morning candidates
As was Allen King
One note. The actual deadline to
sign up is the 25th at Midnight. Sooooo.. even after the Courthouse was
closed, candidates could mail in their form and still make it to the ballot
in May. County Clerk Connie Workman told us, she couldn't recall any mail
in forms during her tenure.
So, who's running for office this time
around?
In the County Commission race where Greg
Fitzwater is not seeking reelection, we have four candidates. With all
of em registered as Demorats, the names include, Peter Triplett, Vanesa
Dunigan, David Schoolcraft, and Poopy Holcomb.
For Sheriff, Donnie Triplet is the incumbent
with Tom Gorgone, Brian Michem, and Allen King vying for the Top
Badge perch. Of the list, only Triplett is a registered Demorat.
Dave Pierson and Sue Bodkins are up for
voter approval for the County Clay School Board contest. Lo Nutter is now
on the ballot to challenge the Pierson slot. That race is non partisan.
Also up for confirmation this time around
are the two Magistrates, Assessor, Prosecutor, Surveyor, and Soil District
Commissioner. Incumbents Jeff Rider, Jeff Boggs, Jim Samples, Teresa Davis,
do not have challengers. No one signed up to be the County Surveyor.
Not everybody that bellied up to the sign up space was allowed to pen their paw on the form.
Here's the total number of voters in Clayberry.
In recent years there has been a major increase in no party voters. Based
on the figures above, it's the independent voter that will decide elections.
