Mums The Word
School Board Meets
Jan 25 2021

There Him Is, Pretty Boy Paxton

Clay County's Board of Ed convened their second meeting of the month Jan 25 up at the Pentagon. Boardster Morgy Triplett participates via the telephone
In the way of business,Kelly Duffield moved out of Clay High and took a grant funded program, AWARE. Three more  job openings remain to be filled in the AWARE program.  All the letters relate to a plan to check on student well being.
Luke Kleman resigned as  Asst Softball Coach at Clay Middle.
Jennifer Hunt was hired as a substitute teacher.
So far, just another Ho Hum gathering. But then...
You know how bad the Pentagon hates it when parents show up for a public meeting. On the 25th a Mom showed up to talk about the educational shortcomings during the pandemic.  Thinking back, during the 1 months, only one other time did a parent show up to talk about COVID concerns in public.
The Mom, we'll call her SB, spoke well as she raised: her kid is a sophomore at Clay High, had perfect attendance until the pandemic and did very well academically, sporting all A's.
Now the kid has failing grades in his core classes.
She felt a big problem was the lack of communication between students and teachers. She felt for her kid to perform well, he needs to talk directly with teachers, to see his teachers. For her ward, he went well over a month (during Red color times) without face to face with teachers and that's hurting.
  Mom, " He's a good kid!"
Superintendent Paxton: It's an imperfect situation... Remote learning is not perfect ... High Schooler's shouldn't nee hand holding.... and, credit recovery is an option.
Tine Burdette: He has time to get his stuff in... Burdette also told those in attendance, parents can check grades via an online site.
But..... there's problems there too. According to Mom and backed up by Paxton, if you email a teacher, she won't get that email until after 4pm and her response will not show up for another 24 hours. There is also the problem of a bunch of the grades are not posted timely online.
Note: It sounds like, the Pentagon does NOT want to hold back any student. That credit recovery deal is an example to not hold back any student that's making even half an attempt.
Making public what most of us of heard in the past, the Mom said it took forever to get a laptop computer to her son and even then, that first puter did not work and to be changed out for another device. As for teachers responding in a timely manner, there was no answer made to that question.
Boardster CHeryl White asked about the number of failing students and changes in standards (grading) are coming.
From the Superintendent: teachers were told to give "I's" instead of F's with the key being, if the kid made an effort. Also, to try and get grades back in good graces, the first nine week period was extended.
Sue Bodkins, "We need to find a happy medium."
Gosh doesn't that sound accommodating? From SB; but he's not had a full month of school this year!
Trying to wrap the public discussion, from the top brass, give us a call if he needs help. Asst Super, Joan Haynie offered, after school tutoring is also available.
If the school schedule confuses you, you're not the lone ranger. Boardster Dave Pierson raised questions on scheduling, that 2 days a week deal at the High School, and why not 5ive days a week online when bricks and mortar schools close down due to  the Corony bug.
Boardster Bodkins asked why the courses aren't tape recorded so students could hear em again and again. No coherent answer was provided Bodkins.
Spring testing is just around the corner, April. The Pentagon is trying to get waivers to test policies. Stuff like no mandate that 95% of students actually take the tests. Also, forget about testing language arts (and maybe math).
Number one on the School system, make sure there's no cut back in funding which is based on student population.
And no, thanks to questions by Ms White, we know, only 125 employees have bothered to take the free vaccine. That's 125 out of around 300 employees. It was Pierson that ciphered, that amounts to about 1/3 of employees.
Following up, White was told, that 125 number is for the first round of jabs. No mention was made of those waiting on the second needle.
Paxton told his Board, there's more vaccinations coming this Wed, Jan27th.
We often give names to big shots in office when they act like turds in public. In years past, the CCC became the three blind mice followed by Kook la, Fran and Alli. In school land, Larry Gillespie became the Somber Super. For Jerry Linkinooooooooooooooooooooger, we came up with all kinds of smart arrs nick names for him.
The last time we called Joe Paxton, Pretty Buy Paxton, he had done something particularly evasive / distorted.   He's back to Pretty Boy Paxton this time around for the way he alluded questions and noddle backed answers.
From the peanut gallery the question came, so, if you had all the vaccines available, could you get everybody "jabbed" during the Jan 27th inoculations.  With his snide no response, the same question was asked again. Still, he refused to give a yes or no to the yes or no question. He did not answer and immediately told the Chair, that's David Mullins, he was done with questions and comments. Translation: Get me out of here quick!
With West Virginia teacher unions filing suit to keep teachers out of the classroom until all are vaccinated, the just above question is very important.
The way we understand it, school vaccines are divvied out by age. With only 125 out of nearly 300 employees in need, vaccinated, that's very bad news.
Also, there was no mention that all 8th graders were told to stay home last Friday, Jan 22nd, due to Corona outbreaks. They never make any mention of such spreads..... and they are frequent
And finally, only full time employees are allowed the free vaccine. That means, all those part time sub teachers, bus drivers, and other school service personnel, they would be risking their life minus the vaccine. Is it any wonder there is a shortage of substitute teachers?
What Pretty Boy refused to say in public, there are many, the majority of his workers, many are refusing the vaccine. That majority must be those dimly lit social media and FOX watchers that take right wing BS as real.
