County Commission Meets
Jan 24 2022
Clay County
Commission convened their public meeting Jan 24th at 10am. All
three Commissioners were in attendance with around 15 or
so in the peanut gallery.
In the way of hot juicy kernels of decision,
there were none. The meeting lasted just 7 minutes, nearly a
record for CCC meetings.
What did come up was the number irate Clayonians who
recently received notice of property tax increases. According
to Commission Prez Fran King, she and other Commissioners have
received tons of phone calls on the matter and none of em were
pleasant.
Just below is a portion of the poorly worded notice
mailed out in early Jan 2022.
Up near the top of the handwritten "or"
after "and". Assessor Teresa Davis wrote that for a
clarification. The "and" was not correct
Have your property values increased over 10% in one year?
We talked with Assessor Teresa Davis this past week. She
reported: 3600 notices had been mailed out. The increase came at
the hands of State folks after performing an annual land study.
And, she too has been over run with letters, emails, and phone
calls from upset tax payers.
Ms Davis reported one guy told her, things were so tight
now a days, he couldn't pay his taxes and continue buying meds
and food.
If you think this is gross injustice, you have the
month Feb to make your thoughts known. Feb is Board of Review
month in this State... and Yes, we're a part of it.
To complain, call up the County Clerk's office and make
an appointment to go before the CCC for review. Appointments
dates are Feb 1st, 4th, 9th, and 17th.
