Town Council
Oct 2022

Some how, some way, we missed updating from the Oct 2022 Town Council meeting. Here tis albeit a little tardy.
COuncil persons Joyce Gibson and Jason Hubbard were absent from this public gathering. Four or five were in the peanut gallery for the meeting.
   In a nutshell....
Financially, the Town is setting pretty. In their Town account: $19,000; Wawa account $31,000; and in the poop account, up $2000.
Trick or Treat will be celebrated Oct 29th from 6 to 8 pm
Mayor Shamblin wants to grow some kind of Halloween activity for the downtown section of Clay. Trunk or Treat will be staged over at Clay High.
The Big Apple gang asked Council to cover the cost of the Haunted House to be held over at the old Foodland Store building. Thumbs up was given. Times and dates are over on the EVENTS page.
After a loooong delay in getting land owner permission to build a new WaWa tank in Maysel, Council has a green light and once again is waiting on their attorney, Roger Hanshaw to draw up the paperwork.
The Wawa plant puter went dead and $17,470.00 unit will be purchased. The new unit will allow monitoring the operation via remote control.
Quietly, and often without notice, employees come and go without much attention. It has become common place.
Like, over at the Log Factory, the sewer operator resigned. Currently the plan is operating without a certified operator. The DEP has been told about the serious issue.
Need a job, talk to the Mayor ASAP.
Discussion turned to how crappy the Town looks and how that affects growing tourism. From Council person Jerry Stover: "We live in a cesspool." We didn't hear any solutions to the long standing problem but at least they were talking about.
Think back readers. 10 months ago there were big plans to build a community park down beside the Pisgah bridge on the old Chevy dealership building now owned by the Clay Fire Dept. Sounded good back then especially the part about having the $$$ available for the build including a splash park for the kids.
That splash park is off the table now. Instead the "natural" park is in the works. That natural park included $24K in outdoor playground equipment compliments a grant.
Now if they can just keep the grass cut!
The elected body went into secret time for employee evaluations but not before long time WaWa plant operator Drema Thomas handed out a typed information page and after mentioning the many that talk about her ample wages. Last year Ms Thomas brought home right at $70,000.00
 In the way of tidbits...
Council has every intention of making a big blunder by hiring a Town Badge and Town Municipal Court. They have been looking for a certified Badge willing to work for starvation wages and have a chance of getting shot at while there's no backup help for the person.
For this meeting and according to Mayor Shamblin, they are having a hard time finding such a willing person and instead, they may hire a night watchman, or now adays, a night person to keep an eye on the municipality.
There's been a lot of talk about a $250 million grant program available for govt agencies. For this Town, the application is for  $1.5 million to build out sidewalks, streetscape.
Finally, some businesses received a letter from Mountaineer Gas Company informing them, there will be a new "surcharge" tax added to bills. When confronted about this issue, the Mayor said, if you got one of those dastardly letters, bring it in and the fee will be taken off.
