Record Setting Sch Bd
10-27-2020

We've actually got coverage from two Clayberry School Board meetings. First the old from Oct 12th
During these toughest of times, it's interesting, not one parent , guardian, grand parent, ninguno, have showed up at a public meeting to ask questions about Corona and related school topics. On Oct 12th, the public part of the meeting lasted just 8 minutes. That's not a record but darn close to the 7 minute shortest meeting on record in the last 25 years or so.
  From the 12th...
Chair Dave Mullins was preoccupied with a new Clayberry School history book just handed out to Board members. He was intrigued to say the least. How intrigued? During Sue Bodkins opening prayer, Mullins missed it completely was he dove into the info. To get his mind back on the public meeting, Dave Mullins took the book away from Mullins and set it aside. There was laughter.
To date, this fiscal year, $746,507 tax dollars have been received according to head honcho record keeper Jennifer Paxton. In Sept., $152K was spent from grant funds on Covid supplies
As for those long promised lap top puters for each kid in the season, the wait is on. Superintendent Joe Paxton told his Board, some of the old puters (re manufactured)  will be shipped next week. Don't get too excited readers, when the wobbly units arrive, it will take more time to format the rascals. As for who gets the rationed puters first, no answer came from the front table.
We've got a new welding teacher at Clay High. The two night a week position went to Nicholas McCarty who is an employee of Pierson Lumber Company.
Eight minutes into the meeting, the elected body as well as Joe Paxton, Jarrod Fitzwater and Joan Haynie went into secret time for nearly 40 minutes. After all that away from the public time, no decision was made public. Our guess, talk was on the bus driver and bus load of kids in quarantine after a positive Corony Bug test.
All done at 6:47
Most curious of all, here we are in the middle of the worst Corony outbreak to date, with kids and personnel in quarantine, and there wasn't one mention of the virus. Not a peep.

Now for the record setting Oct 26th Sch Bd meeting. In all, it lasted just 6 minutes, a new record for sure.
  From the 26th..
Boardsters on hand were Dave Mullins, Dave Pierson, Morgy Triplett, and Susan Bodkins. Cheryl White participated via cell phone citing a medical condition, a broken finger.
Board Chair Dave Mullins told the world, he's better than anybody else in the room and no longer needed a face covering to participate in the proceedings.
Whitney Harmon was hired as a substitute teacher pending certification. Her college degree is in graphic arts.
  From the peanut gallery
How many students are enrolled this year? Paxton, on the top of his head, 1756 and that changes daily.
Of those, how many are in virtual school? Paxton 400 or so.
How come last week, Clay High was shut down for two days after at least one positive Corony test and this week, CHS was closed just one day after a positive was determined? Paxton said it took longer to do contact tracings last week than this time around.
Are teachers being temp checked each day at CHS? Paxton Yes.
It was a short meeting for sure. Had it not been for the questions from the peanut gallery, there would have been zero Corony info provided the public. It's as if, there is something more important than that info. We think the whole lot of em have been watching too much Fox Entertainment.

Sue Bodkins fired out this Facebook post before the public meeting. We don't do Facebook in any fashion but Gosh, when it's emailed  to us, we got to take a read. Her question is on edumacation in Clayberry.
Had she been paying attention, Ms Bodkins would have known, there hasn't been education in County Clay after the third grade... well, not in decades. We and many other counties have produced dismal standardized test results for many years.
