BDA MEETS
Nov 8

Cough Cough Hack Hack
Mitch Returns

The last part of Oct and on into Nov, those were tough times for the Business Development Authority (BDA) Chair, Mitch DeBoard. Twice he was in CAMC with COVID. During the Nov 8th BDA meeting, DeBoard said, a couple times he felt like he was going to die and felt so bad, didn't care if he did. As of meeting time, he was still on oxygen and off work. As for back to normal, not so much. He said he was barely able to get around without huffing and poofing.
When asked if he wished he had taken the COVID shots, from Mr Wheezy, "I'm not sure if I would."
Here's a few snippets from that public meeting.
Bernie Howe lives up near Ivydale and has been active in County Clay for almost a year. He will soon be seated on the BDA Board during an upcoming CCC meeting.
On the BC&G RR upgrade funded by FEMA:
Around 2000 ties have been replaced so far (that's about 20%);  concrete work continues on bridge #4 way up beyond Swandale; most culverts are now in place;  and close to $1 million has been spent.
Clayberry Parks and Recreation will use the BDA building for a Christmas yard sale, bazaar, on Dec 4th. Mark your calendars.
How about an update on a new ERTS Park Superintendent... We ain't got one yet. Turns out , the first two that were selected for the job , those guys bailed out. The application process, bidding, will begin again. Don't look for an announcement until Spring at the earliest.
Down in Kanawha County, on ERTS, the Queen Shoals and Morris Creek bridges have been completed.
Sit down folks. The first of 9 outhouses has been placed on ERTS. The plastic covered concrete structure is ready for use and and and the cost: $47,000. That's right, $47K not for all of em but $47K for just one!
As for contractors being on schedule, according to DeBoard, they are pretty close on schedule of their 300 day contract.
Some have been reading about homeowners along ERTS all peed off over loss of rights of way and threatening to file some kind of lawsuit. Again from DeBoard,  none of that is slowing down progress on building the hiking, biking, horseback riding trail along the Elk.
Back in Sept and after Hurricane Ida smashed thru this county, we reported serious damage to ERTS.  So bad, we reported, the trail was, is, impassable for even a baby stroller. Mitch told the assembled, one of those just quit Superintendents came up and cut some of the fallen trees.
On another note. Remember the stuff about the DNR wanting to build the Park office and maintenance center near the Pisgah bridge? Back in May, and again according to DeBoard, they wanted to get started real soon and get the facility up and running in 180 days.
Well. none of that has happened. Now, the structure will have to be bid out. DNR has allotted $1.2 million for the building. The Town of Clay is donating the land at Pisgah which was formerly the old sewer plant.
With the Chair hacking and coughing every other word and trying to catch his breath, the meeting was a quicky lasting to 7pm.
We're glad to see the lad back in the saddle and hope the long term affects of COVID will not slow him down too much.
