Logs 10% More Expensive Soon
Town Council Meets Dec 1st

Councilperson Jack Brown (L), Mayor
Shamblin (R)
Clay Town Council
held their public meeting on Dec 1st, 2020. Elected reps
present: Mayor Josh Shamblin, Recorder Cindy Mullins, Council
persons Denise Holcomb, Renee Moore, and Jack Brown. Jerry
Stover and Joyce Gibson were wayward and not present for the
meeting.
Happy to report, everyone in attendance wore a face
mask from start to finish without exception.
Maybe the most important mention came from the Mayor
who reported they have requested and approved for a 10% Log
Factory rate increase for the Town. With so many struggling
businesses in the county's only municipality, that increase
will sting. Look for it to hit the bills in a couple months.
For the last 20+ years, since the new Log Factory was
OK'd by Council and built, it was too large with too much
costly capacity. Back then, Council approved the construction
project to accommodate over 600 customers and an expansion of
customer base over into the hamlet of Maysel. During the two
decades in service, there has been no growth inside Town
limits and the Maysel folks refused to be sucked into that
money pit. The over capacity costs a lot in chemicals,
manpower and maintenance.
Now plans are being made to take the place and
cut it in half. Less capacity, less cost.
Here's a nice wittle Christmas stocking stuffer.
According to the Mayor, their new plan of salvation is to
request rate increases on an annual basis from now on. Gulp!
During the last several Council meetings, it was
reported that the Town coffers were going bare. There was a
major problem, loss of revenue, that could not be
identified. On Dec 1st, Shamblin said he still could not find
where the problem was.
But But But.. for this month, the bleed has
stopped. As a matter of fact, The Sanitation account was in
the black $1900; the Wawa Account was ahead by $500 for the
month, and Town's General Account was looking good to the tune
of $2000 for Oct.
Shamblin, " We have built up a cushion.... It's
all positive"

Keeper of the Records, Cindy Mullins
The Town plans
to hire a part time maintenance person. Details are over on
the JOBS page.
Where's the Christmas decorations? The Mayor says
the sparkling snow flakes and such will go up sometime next
week in time for the Christmas Celebration.
About that Celebration, factoring in the deadly
Covid 19 virus, things will be different this year. The floats
and decorated vehicles will be stationary in front of the
Courthouse with the participants doing the walking around.
Date is set for Dec 12th beginning around 5 pm at Courthouse
Square.
Hosts this year are the Town of Clay and Deliciously
Vivid. According to Josh, Christian Elliot will not be involved.
Discussion was held on the newly erected Veteran banners
on Main Street. All nodded in agreement, they look good
As for the rebuild of the Log Factory, a $545,000 grant
to design the rascal , has been approved.
If you look around Town, you might have noticed the new
handicap accessible street corners. The concrete sidewalk
corners and the built in traction mats all come compliments
the long stalled (12 years in the making) sidewalk improvement
project.
Council is asking all businesses to decorate the store
fronts before the big stationary parade, Celebration on Dec
12th. It looked nice last year. Hope it's even better this
year.
11 minutes into the public meeting, Council went secret
to approve employee raises. We'll try to get those
increases shortly and post here. Translation: With the
snow comin down and cold as a rat's butt, the Ace Cub Reporter
opted out of standing outside, waiting on Council to end their
secret time.
