Lively County Commission Meeting
Feb 10 2021

With Fran King at the helm,County Commission meetings are much more lively. Not sure if anything more gets accomplishments but they are much funer to watch and participate .
CCC convened their first of two meetings this month on Wed the 10th. 20 or so occupied the peanut gallery. The normal wills, and waiver of settlement motion were made and passed. Nothing too interested with that mundane stuff.
Over the objections of Ambulance Director Bev King, CCC refused to hire new ambulance drivers until background checks are in hand. Bev was not a happy camper insisting the new staffers are needed since a couple other employees plan to bail out shortly. Questions came up on the Ambulance service using a private third party checker instead of the Sheriff's Dept.
For those that don't remember.... The CCC demands to actually read the background checks themselves before a hire. If the Top Badge's office does the service, law enforcement won't allow the Commission to see the results.
Jonathan Holcomb, that's Randy's son, was hired as a part time Black Shirt effective last month at $14 per hour. The Franster suggested Jonathan was already trained and certified (as a DNR Brown Shirt) and would work as needed.
Here's an interesting notion. Bethel Methodist Church requested to use $2000 from CARES Grant funding to further their food pantry program in Clayberry. No decision made . The question is, can Fed $$$ go to a Church group for such services.
Here's one to think about. County Clay has had an always controversial Flood Plain Ordinance for several years, Each time the topic comes up, Commissioners prepare to be hung.
On the 10th , a vote to change the current Ordinance was read and approved on the first reading, The vote came after discussion on the changes. One of the changes allow for "variants" to the zoning law.
As best we can read and heard that morning, when finally approved, anybody, business or private individual, can request to be excluded from the Ordinance. Get it? If you're the right person, you would NOT have to follow the law nor pay flood insurance which is very costly. If you have the right last name, just ask for a variant and all the legal BS goes away.
Two new ambulances were purchased from Penn Care Inc for a total of $148,730.00
Announced, as of Jan 1st, the county's jail bill amounted to $1,236,754.13 and growing daily.
The old Nutrition Site in Two Run , owned by the CCC, will soon be vacant. Fran King brought up possible uses for the place including: business incubator, commercial community kitchen for aspiring home businesses,  and a community center for weddings, meetings etc. No decisions made
Cheryl White, via the telephone, pushed the need to have a Chamber of Commerce. She's been doing research for the idea. No decision made with Ms White continuing her effort. Note:  Many  years ago, maybe 25, a Chamber of Commerce group was formed or at least half formed. That attempt failed shortly thereafter. HAd something to do with locals having to pay dues to be included.
Grants are available and being applied for to fix the outside entrance steps and front flat areas up at the old Courthouse.
From the peanut gallery, a bald headed guy complained on the BDA for not wearing face masks during their recent public meeting. The guy referred to an emergency order OK'd  last March by the CCC requiring workers to follow state guide lines. Ms King said she would fire off a nasty gram to the BDA in support of wearing face coverings.
And finally, Magistrate Jeff Boggs was fired up overa recent Charleston Gazette article which mentioned Magistrates aren't doing enough. That quote, not doing anything, was attributed to Commissioner King,
Firing back, King,  "I don't know what you're talking about!!!"
After a bunch of warmed up discussion and with Jeff Bogg's head turning beet red, a call was made to the author of the Gazette article. Turns out, the quote was correct but was made by some other "King" and not our King.
Fran made Boggs kiss her on the cheek as an apology.
  All's well that ends well
