Welcoming CMI to Fola

Feb 20 2023

Ugly? Moonscape?
Yes. But, that terrain is similar to warring places around the world, China, Iraq, Afghanistan  come to mind.
Finally something perfect in County Clay!

There's something going on over on the old Fola Coal Strip mine site. No it's not being reclaimed  and made pretty but there is growth. You can read the opening volley, announcement, in our Jan 13th article. If you don't go over there and refresh your memory none of what's coming will make any sense. We'll wait on ya... still waiting.... are you back?..... Oh , There you are. Here goes readers.
Monday morning, Feb 13th, Clay County's only locally owned and operated newspaper of choice toured the CMI site and interviewed Director Wally J. Hatfield.
CMI (Civil Military Innovation) has already purchased a couple hundred acres of the Fola site. The plan is to own and operate several thousand acres there. The place is already operating a military and emergency service training  facility and has for a couple years. The idea is to expand the place and offer more opportunities.
Fola wasn't their first try. Non profit CMI was building up a mine site in Boone County but that one went South. Thievery was problem numero one. Thus, the door opened up for Clayberry.

Head Honcho Wally Hatfield

Our land locked vast wilderness is perfect for advanced training of civilian response teams and military elite groups. Before you get all worried about bullets flying left and right... This high tech warfare zone will NOT being using live ammo. Instead, blank rounds will make the sound and lasers will determine a hit. More stuff is comin like a repair shop for in field repairs and upgrades
Let's talk about that Wally Hatfield.
He has a big picture plan on his mind  When you've got  200 or more young men and women on site at a time, they need something to do during their off hours. When you have that many trainees on the ground, CMI will need places to make quick purchases too. Get it? Fresh new $$$ comin into Clayberry
For the young people, they need stuff to do / see, places to house them and maybe even family members, a place to drink beer, eat pizza, maybe a mom and pop restaurant and more. Already you're seeing those large military trucks fueling up at service stations. Legacy Foods is already feeling the growth of serving several hundred meals a week.
Up on site, there are many many porta-potty boxes in use. That's  real money
Hatfield promises that he will try and use local suppliers. There's another thang. He wants to see a restaurant  grown. To that end, he's trying hard to locate such a place in downtown Clay. Ditto for finding office space for his management folks.
Because CMI is a year round training center. That means those new jobs will be full time or mostly full time additions to our economy.
Got an idea? Think you can offer them something? Wally's response, come talk to him.

See those concrete slabs? That's the foundation for new metal sleeping quarters. We spotted 9 such pads already complete on one flat spot. Special note, local contractors did that work! One much larger pad, maybe 60' by 80', has already been poured. When completed, that will be a training center.

We think that massive conglomerate of steel shipping containers, that's called a structural collapse site and will be used to train first responders and fire fighters.

The new green building is  a classroom. In the foreground are 50+ uniformed personnel getting into a truck and heading to a different training spot.
So... in Appalachia, we have a habit of thinking wild thoughts and spreading em far and wide. One of those rumors:  Don't tell anybody but they're up there building an under ground bunker for dumb clucks from DC.
We asked Hatfield about that. His response, Nope, ain't happening but, sometime down the road, they hope to have sub terrain tunnels built to simulate war scenarios.

Blowing smoke? Not according to Wally. From the head honcho himself:  we will purchase locally....we use hardware stores locally...the face of Clay will change with new facades.... the new jobs will be giving back to Clay.... this week we hope to hire 3 new workers for maintenance duties... that new ERTS Park is important to us too, it will give our people something to do during R&R.
What do they need from us, Hatfield: We need people with skills...

Saab is handling the techy stuff on site.

So, do you want to make some $$$ with a vendor trailer?
How about in need of a full time job?
   Have an office building?
How about a location for a restaurant?
