TAX INCREASE HEARING COMIN'
County Commission Meets
March 14th 2022

During each County Commission meeting, many decisions are made on everything from estate settlements to use of the Courthouse facility. Each item is important. But most of it bores the crap out of us.  For this meeting from March 14th, we're zeroing in on two of the interesting topics from that gathering.
First. Ever hear  a politician say, your taxes will go down. Or, how about,  this tax increase vote will actually reduce your taxes.
On March 14th, item 21 on the agenda read: Move to hold a hearing on March 28th at 9:45 am regarding a  "Notice of Proposed Tax Increase". We didn't change a word readers. That notice was referring to a 2% property tax increase coming our way.
Put that on top of the just OK'd 10% increase on every stitch of property in the County. Don't forget, the Pentagon was wanting to continue their Excess Levy totaling $2.25 million on top of everything else. And , coming during the Primary Election in May, is another wallet busting hand out to provide more tax dollars for the fully paid  for Clay Ambulance Service and volunteer fire departments.
According to Commissioner King and County Clerk Connie Workman, this 2% tax increase will actually lower county taxes. Lower?
Workman explain that the very confusing mathematical methodology  came from the Gold Dome in Charleston and corrects errors in Charleston thinking. Both said they didn't understand the method but after talking to the Big Suits down there, both believed, taxes would go down just a tad.
Here's the keeper folks. Adding more to the ball of confusion, and according to both King and Workman, whether the CCC votes for the increase or votes against the increase, after the hearing, your tax burden will be reduced.
  Gulp!
Anyway you look at it or try to figure it out, the March 28th hearing at 9:45am, is surely worth draggin out of bed and attending.
Commissioner Fran King is up for a reelection bid this May. Stuff like tax increases or confusion on tax increases, that's sure to trend some in the county away from her staying in office an additional term.
Commissioner Schoolcraft was also seated up front. He's smart enough not to enter into this fray. He kind of kept his head down so King got the spotlight! David Schoolcraft also voted in favor of having the hearing on the 28th.

Commissioners David Schoolcraft and Fran King. Connie Kinder was absent due to family medical reasons. That's County Clerk Connie Workman on the far left.

Here's the first public acknowledgment on something we've being hearing about since Jan 29th, the School Excess Levy Election, which failed miserably.
Items 12,13,14,and 15 on this agenda were to change polling places during the upcoming May 10th Primary Election. The motions were all successful and passed unanimously. The changes removed all School properties from being polling places. For decades, school gyms, libraries, hallways, have been used for voting.
What happened. Why the change?  Ms Workman, "It's time to move due to the conditions [there]"
And then and then, the first public mention of security cameras in use during voting times, was brought to light. Cameras? Yelp, that's what we've been hearing since two days after the Excess Election.
Putting 6 and 3 together and coming up with 5, here's the story on the street. Strictly  a guess on our part readers but here goes.
Word has it, after that Election, Pentagon officials sat down and watched footage from the school videos. Their idea was to see who did vote and who stayed away. Knowing who didn't vote (like employees for instance)   would open the door to more arm twisting and threats by the Pentagon.
Adding credence to the rumor, one guy from the peanut gallery asked: Will the new polling places have security cameras ? Fran King: If they do, it will be easier to take care of.
We think those last words mean, demands will be made and adhered to, turn off the intrusive monitoring cameras.
Note: We don't think crappy video from the school cameras are good enough to see how a voter cast their ballot. It is resolute enough to pick out a face and for the School System toscribble it down for future reference, IE arm twisting.

Secret Time Held

You've been reading about a recent multi billion dollar settlement against drug manufacturers for their part in the long standing opioid epidemic.. Attorney Mark Troy was on hand for this meeting and went behind closed doors to discuss the $$$$ with the County Commission. Afterwards, the elected folks up front said the notorious standard response, no decisions were made.
Don't get all excited readers. All those funds will be peed away on govt programs without a penny coming your way for the loss of a loved one or a dependency problem.
