Sch Bd Controversy & More
March 22 2021

Clay County's Board of Education convened their March 22nd public meeting at 6pm in the Pentagon. Boardsters Dave Pierson, Dave Mullins, Morgan Triplett and Susan Bodkins participated in person with Cheryl White via the tele. A couple taxpayers were in the peanut gallery.
From that gathering, we're noting a few new hires/changes and mighty cluster big time.
  First the mundane stuff....
WVU's Extension Office was forwarded $21,388 for operational expense (salary)
Sherman Pritt hired as a bus / truck driver
New substitute bus drivers are Earl Dunlap, Rick Starcher, and Terry Traub
Long time teachers Marlene Lewis, Molly Chapman, and Suzanne Stinson retired from the trenches.
Brett Oates (fully certified in Ohio) hired as a substitute teacher. Beth Hubbard (Masters in Dental Health) was hired as a substitute teacher. Brooklin Gould , has some kind of college degree, hired as a substitute teacher

Dave Mullins (seated) and Joe Paxton signing the new loan papers

Years ago, the Sch Bd entered into a costly agreement intending to save tons on electric bills. To date, the debt stands at $1.260 M. Final signatures were given to refinance that long term debt. New interest rate will be down to 1.15%  After paying various attorney and closing fees, the savings should be around $155,000.
During the paperwork, Boardster Cheryl White asked about getting a report on how much was really saved over the years after paying for equipment upgrades. No one knew. She asked that a report be provided.

And then, and then, the biggy for the night.
Item 16 was a vote to discipline a bus driver. Before the vote, the Board went into secret time to discuss their game plan. For 20 minutes they put their heads together.
Bus drivers have a cardinal rule, they can NOT, not ever, get off Big Yeller when the bus is running and they are not allowed to leave the keys are in the ignition. With kids on board, you can see the importance of such a law. Over the years, accidentally of course, some have gotten in trouble. If the driver sets his feet on the ground and keys are on the bus, that's a big no no.
Our guess, Ms DeBoard did just that to remove a piece of wire, obstruction, from her bus. With cameras on board, Bingo, in the grease.
Just a hunch from us but there you have it.
After secret time, Board Prez Dave Mullins asked Superintendent Joe Paxton for his recommendation.
Without a stutter, cough, no distraction, Paxton told his  Board, give the Lady three days of work WITH pay. With pay.  A unanimous Aye vote was heard including Cheryl White via the cell phone.
Now, it might be called a suspension, been if you're getting paid for not working, that's really a vacation!
That vote for pay was another first for this county. Our bet, as soon as all the other drivers get wind, especially those that have been suspended in the past, a bunch will be peed off to no end.
  It gets worse readers.
Let's say that Paxton flat out, screwed up, he just misspoke . If that turns out to be case, then that means, the entire Board was asleep at the wheel. All of em had just come from a secret time where they decided they wanted a suspension without pay. Our duly elected Board was paying no intention during the official vote.
It will be interesting to see if the Board re-votes to take the pay away, or if this will be a new trend.... pay for no work or maybe,  or....just letting the Board sleep thru meetings.
