State Senate

County Commission

My name is Joyce  Shamblin-Johnson and I’m running for the office of  Clay County Commissioner.  I live in Ivydale with my husband, Paul Johnson Jr.(Dickie).  We are the parents of two wonderful sons, Joseph (JD), and Brandon Johnson. My late father Ray Shamblin, was a Conservation officer in the area for many years, my mother, Wanda Shamblin was the first female deputy in the county and served under 3 different sheriff’s terms. My grandfather and uncle, Frank Fields and Harald Fields, bot served as  Clay County Sheriff at one time. My husband’s mother, Ann Johnson, was a longtime employee at Ivydale Elementary School.  I hope to follow the tradition of our family members by working and serving  the people of Clay County.

If you looked quickly you may have seen my campaign signs and banners, I put up them up all over the county.  However it seems they were popular or valuable items and were stolen as fast as I put them up. I lost nearly 200 signs and to date 5 huge banners, but If you were fast you may have caught a glimpse. First and foremost, let me say that I believe in being a decent, honest, good person.  I will NEVER stoop to dirty politics or lowering my standards and being any different because I’m running for political office.  Will I tell you the truth about stuff going on? You bet I will and if I can’t win an election based on being myself and my merits , while holding high standards, then so be it.

I’m not trying to buy my way into office or impress you with lots of trinkets and favors. I want to be known for myself not junk I give away.  I don’t want the job just for the insurance or benefits, I want the job to to be part of helping to make good things happen in this county and representing its people.  I don’t believe in the “good ol’ boy” way of doing things.  I don’t believe in favoritism or cliques. I don’t believe in telling you one thing and your neighbor something else.  I DO believe in treating peoplewith honesty, integrity and respect .I believe in everyone being treated fairly and equally. I do believe you should be represented and your voices heard. I’m straightforward and not afraid to speak my mind or stand up for what I believe in or what you believe in.   I don’t sugarcoat my words, I am upfront and tell it like it is.I also believe in treating people like I’d want to be treated and talking to people like I’d want to be talked to. I‘m old school , I still believe in good manners.

I’m a volunteer for Big Otter Vol Fire Dept, which I’ve done for several years managing the business side as well as being the treasurer.  During that time,I’ve written successful grants to obtain new trucks, a side-by-side and trailer, tools and other equipment to help the department in their work. There was no county paid professional grant writer doing these grants , I wrote them.  I have years of business experience from  working with the public in Charleston and Clay,  as well as being a volunteer with various organizations including  Clay Primary Health Care board,  Clay Development board, little league, youth basketball and school when my sons were growing up. I taught computer skills to community members  in a computer lab sponsored by the Future Generations of America. I’ve worked early voting and in election polls the last few years.

I can’t make campaign promises of what I’ll do because it takes a majority to accomplish things, not just one person. I can promise to listen to you and your concerns and work toward those and the best interest of the county.   I want to work to end the constant negativity heard about Clay County.  I love this county and its people. It takes all of us working together to be successful, and I know it can be done because we do have good people. Together we can make good things happen and begin to hear positive comments replacing  the negative.Like everywhere, there are many things we can improve -- I want to help make it happenand I want to have your help and support along the way. WE can make it happen. Let’s take advantage of  and support the new local businesses developing,  let’s support local people, let’s use the opportunities that tourism is opening, let’s make our county a place to be proud of again! Our county needs changes and now’s the time to start!

I’m asking for your support and vote on May 10th. Let me represent YOU in county government.Make JOYCE your choice for County Commission! Thank you for your time and consideration!

RE-ELECT CHERYL A. WHITE

BOARD OF EDUCATION

My name is Cheryl Ann Leina’ala White. I am once again running for a seat on the county’s Board of Education.

I was born on the island of Kaua’i, Hawai’i. My father, a Filipino immigrant, and my mother a Native Hawaiian with Chinese and German ancestors. I am multi-lingual.

I was raised in a small community and understand the struggles we all face. We were poor. My Dad always helped me with my homework because he wanted me to have an education and a better life

I moved to Clay County in 2005. I live in Wallback with my husband, David White. I am a Real Estate Broker and own WV Land Farm & Home Realty, Inc. David and I also own Man in the Hat Contracting & Construction, LLC. licensed general contractors. We employ local people and support our community.

Eight years ago, I ran for public office. For the very first time in my life. I ran for a position that I could be most effective in, HELPING CHILDREN.

Reflecting on my own struggles, I want to help students understand that an education, academia or vocational, can help you achieve goals and overcome hurdles in life. Background and circumstances may influence who we are but, we are responsible for whom we become.

STUDENTS are the future. While we may have the resources to teach, we also need parents and others to assist in ensuring that each child has the motivation to learn.

Success does not come overnight, it comes by working hard for what you desire. Success is a journey and the need to have support along the way. It takes a village to raise a child. That village is our community, Clay County. I pray that you will cast your vote for me once again on May 10, 2022.

Thank you in advance.

DISCLAIMER:  None of the persons pictured above have endorsed me.

Your Voice. Your Vote!

Someone You Can Count On!

Lolita Nutter

 Clay County Board of Education

Do you want change?  Are you tired of not knowing where your tax dollars are being spent?  Would you like to have a chance to ask questions and have your voice heard?  Then, I am your candidate!

My name is Lolita Nutter and I am the daughter of Jerry Helms Sr., a retired US combat veteran of the Vietnam War. My late mother, Francis (Mullins) Helms, was born and raised in Clay, West Virginia. My 3 siblings and I all attended schools in this county. I have been the manager of the Clay Go Mart for over thirty years and have worked with Go Mart to support our kids.  I have been married to Jeff Nutter for almost 40 years, and both us attended Clay County Schools.  Our children, Jena and Joshua also attended and graduated from Clay County High School. My family is well-rooted in this school system and before it is said and done, my 7 grandsons have attended or will have attended Clay County Schools.

I believe that as a parent, grandparent and a tax payer, that there needs to be change in the way that our school board conducts business.  We have had major successes in the past, but we are also faced with a lot of challenges. The Covid-19 pandemic, lack of teachers, and no money, are all excuses.  We don’t need excuses! We need action and people on the Board that are willing to take action and make no excuses. We need consistency. We need communication at all levels. We need transparency.  WE NEED CHANGE!

If, I am elected to the Board of Education, I promise to listen to your ideas and concerns.  Everyone, who knows me, knows that I will stand for what is right and I will do my best for the children in our county.

Together, we can create change.  Change for a better Board, and a better system; but most importantly- CHANGEfor a Better Education for our Children!

If I am elected, I promise to do the following:

·       Work hard in making sure that school funds and policies are transparent to the public.

·       Keep all of our elementary schools open.

·       Increase technology in all schools.

·       Upgrade all elementary school playgrounds.

·       Add additional vocational (CTE) classes at the high school (masonry, small engine/auto repair, cosmetology).

·       Open the auxiliary gym for community/family events.

·       Create incentive programs to increase student and staff attendance for both service personnel and educational staff.

·       Increase and fund educational field trips to bridge the gaps that our kids face.

·       Provide more after-school and enrichment activities to improve test scores.

·       Advocate for the public to speak and ask questions at all Board meetings.

·       Work more closely with the youth programs in our county.

·       Find ways to build trust and create ways to make all kids want to come to school.

With Lolita Nutter on the Board, You won’t be ignored!

It’s Your voice and Your vote!
