County Commission Meets
June 12 2023

County Clerk Sheila Stone (L) and Commissioner Johnson during the June 12th CCC meeting. After years of Connie Workman and Judy Moore as County Clerks, seeing Sheila up front, well she catches attention

When a public meeting lasts but 13 minutes, that gives us plenty of space to improvise and come up with head scratchers. Be warned
Commissioners Joyce Johnson and Connie Kinder were at the helm during the June 12th County Commission meeting held at the Courthouse. CCC Prez Dave Schoolcraft was screwing off somewhere else. With just  6 or so so taking up space in the peanut gallery there were few action items on the agenda.
But let's talk about the questions that came from the public in attendance.
First, Joe Lanham from the VFW Post 4419 asked about a promised $50K grant from last year that is suppose to cover the cost of a new war memorial that stand half finished across from the Courthouse.
Serving as CCC Prez pro tempe, Connie Kinder, in response: I haven't seen any paperwork, attempts have been made to contact Delegate Roger Hanshaw via several means and so far, Hanshaw has not replied to anything or anybody.
Discussions turned to others running against Hanshaw during the upcoming election. Taking care of the voting base appears to be low priority for Delegate Hanshaw
Second.... Four months ago Johnson and Schoolcraft took a strong stand on purchasing the RT Sizemore Grocery Store property near the Courthouse on Main Street. Back then, March 27th, Johnson was the outspoken Commissioner in strong support of the purchase ($150,000).
Back then, Connie Kinder was along the lines of, hold it folks, do you have any paperwork, maps of rights of way under the dirt, who owns the minerals, are their any liens on the place. Kinder was trying to slow a stupid purchase down and get their ducks in a row before spending taxpayer dollars. Didn't work.
The vote for the right now purchase was Schoolcraft and Johnson in favor and Kinder a very vocal nay.
That we got to have it right now action item is now 90 days old.
The question from the peanut gallery was: So, have you got a deed on the place? From Kinder, No. Ringleader Johnson: They're not in any hurry to get the paperwork done.
   OK everybody, altogether, Hmmmmm.....
Having watched millionaire Jim Smith, the guy that now owns the old RT property for decades, we think there is some crap, cover up, going on.
Mr Smith is not in the business of buying and selling property. His business is to purchase land, build a building on it, and then lease it out for high dollars. That's how he (and family) made millions and continues to do so today.
Knowing that and the who-doo that Joyce Johnson is capable of, we think, the Smith empire has already told her, no to the sell and Yes to building a building and then doing a long term lease.
It's much easier to just let that March 27th "we got to have the check today" stand Commissioner Johnson made, it's easier to let it slide under the rug til people just forget about. Less egg on her face (and Schoolcraft) that way.
Third.  Commissioner Schoolcraft pulled a slight of hand with an artfully worded agenda item well over a year ago. That crafty wording went right over the heads of the other two setting Commissioners and effectively gave Schoolcraft the OK to purchase the Coon Hunter's Club building from the land company that owns the dirt. That really peed off the Coon Hunters and most of this County with his underhanded move.
It has a been a long time since the purchase and we don't see any sign of the long promised surveyor stakes or anything else. From the peanut gallery, that issue came up during the June 12th meeting.
From Commissioner Johnson something along the lines of, we haven't got the grant to build a new building for the proposed 911 Center.
Back then, Schoolcraft made it sound like they needed to act quickly and make the land purchase. Even over the objection of hunters, he got his way. He got his way by not telling anybody until after the purchase was secured.. that includes the Hunter Club that also had asked to buy the place for their use.
Today the old building stands and weeds are growing taller each day. It's actually a snake pit and located just across the road from a Christian school!
Another shining example of pee poor leadership that has haunted this Land of Little for decades.
If you think edumacation is expensive, try ignorance.
