Ousted Old Guard Finished
School Board Meets
June 27th 2022

We saw the changing of the guard Monday night, June 27th as the de-elected Clay Sch Bd held their final meeting before heading out to the pasture. Heading off to turned out time were Bd Prez Dave Mullins, Morgy Triplett, and Cheryl White. All had been in their elected slot for at least two terms of service. For Mullins, after 12 years, it was a welcome relief. Here's what we saw and heard along another hand full in the peanut gallery.

New Clay High Vo Ag Instructor, Chris Johnson

Long time Vo Ag teacher Brian Holcomb retired at the end of the school year. During this meeting, Chris Johnson received a unanimous Yes vote to come on board and work as a  carpentry, masonry, and general building instructor at Clay County High School. Based on his lineage, Norman Johnson's grandson, Chris Johnson should do a great job for the kids of Clayberry.

Outstanding 2nd grade author, Lyla Titus

Lyla Titus is the gifted second grader that came in second place during the 2022 W Va Young Writer's Competition. Ms Titus came up front and read from her work and showed her colorful hand drawn pictures from the children's book... sure to be a New York Times best seller!
Also on the agenda was replacing CCHS Head Cook Dorothy Childers who opted out and into retirement land. Her replacement in the cafeteria manager slot is Wendy Taylor.
Allison  Vaughan was hired as a multi categorical teacher at Clay Middle.
Annisa Collins is the new volunteer volleyball coach at Clay High.

Here's the last pic of Clayberry Board of Education with Dave Mullins, Morgy Triplett, and Cheryl White at the front table. Name plates will be changed.

Most in the county felt that the out going Boardsters would hurry up and makes some long term last second changes, hires for instance, before leaving office. You know, return favors to their buddies and family members.Thankfully, we didn't see that happen.
  Well except...
Item 12 was to approve a glowing superintendent evaluation for Joe Paxton. After a nearly 30 minute secret time, the Board gave a thumbs up for Paxton with remarks along the lines of, what a great job he's doing and we're looking forward to working with him in the future. That last thought was confusing to us in the peanut gallery.

Cheryl White read her  farewell thoughts as the meeting was near an end. Notice (below) it is well put together, heartfelt, and on point. Here words were well received by all.

Here's Ms White earlier this year volunteering at H E White Elem

Newbies at the ready, Phoebe Nichols, Brooke Jones and Lo Nutter

During the run up to the May 10th Primary election, several of the Board candidates attended the public meetings. Some took notes while others read along the agendas. It was a good thing to see em taking interest.
For June 27th, the three winning candidates sat on the front row and were provided inside stuff like financial reports and year end updates.

In all his glory and going out the back door
Dave Mullins

And then there was poor ole Dave.
He's the lad that was thoroughly trounced during the election, came in 5th in the 7 person race, down by 600 votes from the top vote getter, Phoebe Nichols.
Mullins was in charge of the school system during some very tough times. Like the Derecho, pee poor test scores, dwindling school population, high school rebellion / coup, schools going online during Covid, and of course, the Great Wash Out of June 2016.
Instead of talking about the challenges while in office, Mullins directed his 6 minute spiel at the media. More specifically, at one guy, the Ace Cub Reporter. As publisher of the county's only locally owned and operated newspaper, that lad attends most all School Board meeting and often reports out the crapola that goes on in School Board land.
2022 has not been a good year for the Board Chair. Back at the beginning of 2022, Mullins started off by telling taxpayers, they could ask questions during public meetings he sure wasn't about to provide any answers. If that wasn't bad enough, he added, and he wouldn't allow the Superintendent to provide answers either. From there, everything went to pot, down hill.
His actions, words, deeds, during the run up to the May Primary election contributed greatly to his demise. Voters saw up front, the real Dave Mullins, the real out of control Dave Mullins, the real Dave Mullins that has the brains of naval lint,  first hand via this newspaper of choice.
For his parting thoughts, Mullins' comment included:
After 12 years, it's time to get some things right... I have gone thru so much slander and criticism ... Many people believe that degrading people....
We don't deserve that slander... He has lived off his wife and the school system all this time ... We don't deserve that!...
We haven't said a word, we kept our mouths shut...
He filed bankruptcy! And that's a fact!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If Mr Paxton wants to drive a Mercedes, that's his business...
The Board has had differences but we didn't get mad!
He went on and on. As he did with his outlandish diatribe , around the room and the front table, heads went down as they endured the embarrassment verbiage from the outgoing Bd Prez.
Mullins told those still listening that the guy prints nothing but lies. Stuff like pee poor finances, nope; Susan Bodkins staying in the room for the vote to hire her relative, nope didn't happen;  Big Otter and H E White cutbacks, those didn't happen either.
Whenever Dave gets riled up he loses control of his mouth and brain. His voice goes higher. His head turns blue then red up to his ears. We knew we were getting to Mullins and have for a number of years. But, his true self came front and center, in all of its glory, on his last outing in elected office. It wasn't pretty.
For those that really don't know the guy, this spiel was a true indication of his many short comings and diminished capacity. We're glad it finally came out in full color.
Good bye Dave Mullins. Another era has ended.
From Sa'di: ... the heap in the barn consists of grains, and drop and drop make the inundation.
The first meeting with the new Board in place up front will happen July 5th, 6th, in the Pentagon.
