CORONA AND SCHOOLS
School Board Meets June 8
2020
Our
School Board met in regular session on June 8, 2020. With
all Boardsters present, some actual information was
provided the public. No not voluntarily from the
administration or the Board itself, but instead, brought
on by questioning from parents in the peanut gallery.
Parents read the same school system website
that's available to everyone else. That site is devoid of
substantial information with many of the links out of date
by years!
With schools closed done due to the Corona
bug since March 15th, questions came on topics like, high
school transcripts, a prom, and graduation for the Class
of 2020.
From Superintendent Joe Paxton: CHS
transcripts are now available at the school or "virtual";
the top dogs also want to have a graduation exercise and
have three ways it could happen.
According to Paxton, this year's graduation will
happen July 23rd and will be performed one of three ways,
which are: traditional graduation but out on the
football field where social distancing can be practiced;
or 2 in the gym if it rains that day; or 3, a drive
thru commencement deal, one at a time and then drive away.
Those parents also want a Prom for their wittle
darlings. Ms P said they hope to offer such an event on
July 18th if possible. Be advised, there is nothing set in
stone. Everything is subject to change with all decisions
and guidelines coming from the Gold Dome in Charleston.
How much $$$ has the Pentagon to date. Answer
is: $2,031,441.83 and counting.
There are good and rotten teachers around the
state including Clayberry. One of the great teachers is
Patty Coulter who handled the high test math like calculus
and physics. Agenda item #8 was to accept the
resignation / retirement of Ms Coulter. Math Teachers are
hard to find and good ones are even tougher to find and
keep.
Let's talk high school sports. Some counties
will not offer football season this year. Gulp!
For us, the plan is to have CHS sports but phased in over
several weeks. Phase 1 is work outs and conditioning
but done in small groups of 10 or less, one pod at a time.
The next phase begins July 5th. During this phase , masks
will not be required but highly recommended.
Clay Middle will not have Summer sports.
Board Chair Dave Mullins got his shorts all
bunched over guidelines demanding no more than 10 kids per
bus. Mullins felt, there is no way they can do away
football games with that 10 max requirement. Mullins, " No
Way!"
The Pentagon owns and operates the Clay
Swimming pool which they plan to open later this Summer.
Before that, they have to be given the Seal of Approval
from the Health Dept. No more than 50 will be allowed at
the pool at any one time.
As for the Corona Beer Bug now in the local school
system and if additional sanitizing is required. questions
came. From the Paxton: regular cleaning of "touch" areas
will be performed. He added, the virus dies after 3 days
on a surface.
We hope he's correct.
To tell the truth, something changes every day with
nothing for sure. Even if school will reopen in
August, no solid answers. How many thinking parents will
home school? Will schedules change to 2 days a week in
school and the balance online? Will the new school year
start off with high schoolers followed by the middle
school kids a couple weeks later followed by the small
fries? There are no answers at this date.
The Pentagon is doing an online school reopening
survey. Check it
out here.
