  TV-8 News provides the article:

A former Miss Kentucky and ex-Kanawha County middle school teacher accused of sending nude pictures to a teenage boy was sentenced on Wednesday.

In December, Ramsey Bearse pleaded guilty to one count of possession of material depicting minors in sexually explicit conduct.

At the end of a lengthy sentencing hearing, Kanawha County Circuit Judge Duke Bloom sentenced Bearse to two years in prison. She must report to prison before 10 a.m. on Monday.

"I've heard and read everything that has been provided to the court," Bloom said. "There were a couple of things that were noted from the very beginning and one of the most significant to me was the lack of any acceptance of responsibility.

"You were in a position of trust, you violated the trust of this student and that is not acceptable," Bloom told Bearse. "I think that you got a very favorable opportunity to plead guilty in this case by the state of West Virginia given the conduct that was involved here. You were given quite a break," he said, saying the plea was lenient and he believed incarceration was not only "appropriate but important" in the case.

Bearse was arrested in December 2018 and charged with four counts of sending obscene material to a minor. She was suspended from her teaching position at Andrew Jackson Middle School while the investigation was ongoing. A Kanawha County school system spokesperson previously said she is no longer an employee there.

Authorities said Bearse sent pictures to a former student on the social media app Snapchat. The victim's mother told the court Wednesday that the boy was actually never a student in Bearse's classroom and she questioned how the relationship between the two started in the first place.

"All I can say is that I take full responsibility for my actions and I am sorry. I am so very, deeply sorry to that family that feels hurt by me. I would never want to hurt anyone," Bearse told the court before she was sentenced.

"I've never, ever done anything like this before and I promise you, your honor, I never, ever will again. I've learned the hard way what depression and isolation can do to a person," Bearse said. "I lost my ability to ever teach again, something I worked diligently for in my college career."

The victim's mother also addressed the court.

"I think it's awful to attack my child who was 14-years-old when this started. He had just turned 15 when she was arrested," the mother said, taking issue with comments Bearse's attorney, Tim Dipiero made in his statements to the court. "I feel like everyone is trying to make my son out not to be a victim," the mother testified, noting that her son would require long-term counseling.

“She has already received a life sentence for being placed of a lifetime sex offender registry for the rest of her life,” Dipiero said as he argued against Bearse receiving a prison sentence for the charge.

“A ton of stuff on his phone that was more graphic and more disturbing than what she sent,” Dipiero said. Kanawha County Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Meshell Jarrett argued that it was not relevant to the sentencing of what was in the boy's phone.

Dipiero noted that there was no touching or sexual contact between Bearse and the teen, going on to argue that men who touched children have received sentences outside of prison.

"It is your job to take care of these kids, not to prey on them. I feel your acceptance of blame is half-hearted and the only reason it was stopped and didn't escalate more to physical contact was because of police intervention," the victim's mother told Bearse as she asked Bloom for the maximum sentence of two years.

"The school system has failed to protect him. Please do not allow the judicial system to fail him also," the mother said before the sentence was handed down.

The mother of the victim and Dipiero noted in the hearing that a civil case was in the works but had not yet been filed. "The civil case is being filed due to the negligence by the Kanawha County school board. It was brought to the attention of upper management at AJ Middle School," the mother said. The mother said Bearse was questioned about the pictures, denied the accusations and was allowed to continue to work for several more days.

Bearse is required to register as a sex offender for the rest of her life. Once she is released from prison, she must also serve 10 years of additional supervised release.
