Sch Bd At Work
Bunch Retire
August 22nd

Board at Work

Clayberry's Board of Edumacation convened a monthly meeting on August 22nd at 6pm. All five Boardsters were in attendance and over 20 folks  filled the peanut gallery. If you're wanting some kind of update on the crappy standardized test results, go somewhere else. There wasn't a peep.
  In the way of business..
Long time coach, teacher, athletic director Mary Ramsey called it quits. Her resignation from all assignments was accepted without comment other than she did a wonderful job. We will have more on that in a moment
Dianna Butcher resigned; cook Jennifer Coleman moved over to Clay Elem; Aaron Sivera hired as a custodian; Jacqueline James is the new math teachers Clay Middle pending certification; and Beth Butler (retired) will be a new academic coach working mostly at H E White, Lizemores, and Big Otter grade schools.
Melissa Hill Jarvis and Sandra Burdette were hired as substitute teacher aides
Nicholas Christian, Anthony Duffield, and  Ashley Rapp are new substitute bus drivers.
Cheyenne Truman is a new substitute cook while Joseph Stone was hired as a substitute custodian.
About the only person hired with all the credentials was Jamie Tanner as the art teacher at Clay High.

Now without a Green Shirt, Badge, nor gun, Scott Bass was hired as a substitute teacher

And one lonely Clay High student was voted out of the Clay High island for one full year . That came after a 33 minute secret time.
Clayonian Roger Hanshaw serves as a West Virginia Delegate in the Legislature. For the first time in years, during this election cycle, Mr Hanshaw was on hand to offer glad tidings and a mention of a $250 million grant opportunity.  He said he has the grant applications at the ready and for the Pentagon to get in gear real quick and apply for the sky is the limit opportunity.
In this school system, student test scores are horrible. Statewide, Clayberry ranks fourth from the bottom.
With that in mind, just think what a new pot of $$$ could do for strengthening  learning.
As Hanshaw was presenting the information, Superintendent Paxton, with glee,  asked if astro turf and playground equipment could be applied for.
In the whole wide world, books, internet connectivity, laptops, growing hot spots, growing better teachers, and on and on, there's a tons of things that would help the student. Right?
In the whole wide world, Pretty Boy Paxton had on his mind, a football field looking prettier and playground equipment.

Superintendent Paxton

With another Excess Levy Election coming in a little over 2 months, this time around, the Pentagon is trying harder with ways to make things look better or at least, let the taxpayers know, it's time to support the Levy. Colorful brochures have been printed up and in Paxton's hand but none were handed out to the many in the peanut gallery.
The two billboards near Wallback will be rented to get peoples' attention. As for the big time bill boards located near Clay High, the Super said those were too costly ($645 per month each) for them to use.
Roger Hanshaw stood and told the world, he's in favor of the extra tax pay outs and would gladly cover the high dollar cost of those two outdoor billboards. Upon hearing Hanshaw's promise to pay, Paxton said he was ready to dance a jig!
Boardster Sue Bodkins suggested that they purchase a long banner and stretch it across Main Street in downtown Clay.
Most know, the pro levy handouts in the past were filled with threats and promises the sky would fall if the Levy failed. Kids would told they would go hungry while at school if the Levy went down in flames. That was so believed, at Clay High, leadership had to get on the PA system and tell the hungries, forget what you've been reading / hearing, you can eat all you want and your parents will NOT be billed.
Here's a change readers. Knowing full well of his earlier fibs, this time around Mr Paxton told his Board, all the info has to be factorial.
Wouldn't that be a nice change!
One of the discussion items on the agenda was "Superintendent Goals" . Paxton said the 2022 goals (seven of em) are similar to ones of old but school, student, safety have been added.
In another smart move, School Board meetings will be held at the local schools where the Excess Levy will be pitched to those in attendance. The next meeting will be held at Clay Elem, Sept 12th, beginning at 6pm.

Let's get to the juice shall we?
We think there's more to Mary Francis Ramsey retiring completely from the system. We think, Ms Ramsey wanted to retire from her PE teaching duties while keeping her Athletic Director (AD) extra duty contract. That has been done in the past.
Get it, she draws her retirement and social security, and a teeny bit more from AD duties. Pretty nice!
A few years ago, state rules changed to read, when you retire from teaching duties that means, automatically, you lose those extra duty contracts.  Sounds like, Coach Ramsey didn't know of the change in place. Others in the system did.
As soon as Ramsey turned in her retirement papers, CCHS teacher Phil Dobbins immediately applied for the AD contract. With his years on the job, he got the position before Ms Ramsey knew what was going on and could apply.
We think all that is accurate or at least close to it.
For sure, when the Board gave the thumbs up for Dobbins, Superintendent Joe Paxton grinned from ear to ear.
Also from the meeting, Scott Gibson is the replacement PE teacher at Clay High.

Retirement Time

Due to COVID restrictions,  during the last 3 years, retirement ceremonies were curtailed. after years , decades, of service, at the end of the school years, they just went home. For this meeting, a bunch of em were on hand to receive the slap on the back and shiny wall hanging.
Long serving J B Butcher and Mary Holcomb each committed over 50 years to the local school system. They were the longest serving retirees for this award ceremony.
