CAEZ AWAY FROM THE PUBLIC
Sept 1 2020

During this Corony pandemic, Central Appalachia Empowerment Zone (CAEZ) has been holding most of their monthly meetings via an internet conference calling service called ZOOM. During those many meetings hosted by past Chair Michael Martin, everything came off without a hitch. Log in, turn up the volume, and Poof everyone is seen on the screen and anyone that wanted to participate, they could. Just above is what you see on the monitor during a ZOOM meeting.
ZOOM style huddles are not a great way to include the public in a public meeting. It's better than nothing but very limiting for a healthy discussion.
CAEZ is required to hold open meetings so the public can witness what's going on. For most of their public meetings, few from the general public attend. Heck, for that matter, two of our elected reps, Fran King nor Connie Kinder for instance, bother to show up or sit down long enough for a ZOOM meeting.
On Sept 1st, CAEZ held their gathering via ZOOM. As you can see by the above screen shot, there was a pretty good turn out for the 6pm meeting. Well, except, still no Fran and Connie.

Chair Micki Boggs

Last month, Clayonian Micki Boggs was voted in as Chair of the group replacing long time leader, Michael Martin.
Something was different this time around. The Ace Cub Reporter was prevented from hearing the conversations. Even after a reboot, nothing could be heard.
Not sure of the reason but we have a couple ideas.
When the host (Boggs this time around) connects a ZOOM meeting, everything is at mute levels.  The host has to make sure all participants are un-muted. Because this was her first job hosting ZOOM, maybe she just didn't know what ta do.
Or, the other plausible reason, would be a dirty rotten trick.

Promises Unkept

Public meetings are important.  Keeping the public in such gatherings is required by law and in this case, by the CAEZ bylaws.
We sat in place after seeing the above screenshot. We waited until 6:27pm before giving up the effort.
The only thing we know for sure, compliments a couple emails from the Office Manager, is, a new Director to replace Connie Lupardus, Big Lup to many, was not done nor were by laws changes made.
