For 2020, Maysel's Michael Mullins took home the
honors recognizing
the “unsung heroes” throughout West Virginia, whose work has
made a significant difference in the lives of others. As reported on Metro News, excerpts:
First Lady Cathy Justice presented three state educators with
Rhododendron Awards on Thursday that are
involved in the Communities In Schools program across West
Virginia.
The trio of site coordinators that were honored
in a virtual ceremony include Kathy Brunty of Westside High
School in Wyoming County, Mike Mullins of Clay County High
School, and Carla Snell of Huntington High School in Cabell
County during a virtual ceremony in Charleston.
The First Lady’s Rhododendron Award recognizes
individuals in West Virginia who have demonstrated goodness
and worked for the betterment of their communities. In
particular, this award seeks to recognize the “unsung heroes”
throughout West Virginia, whose work has made a significant
difference in the lives of others.
“We have three exceptional people that we get to
give our Rhododendron Award to today,” First Lady Justice
said. “We’re so proud of all of our recipients for their work
with Communities In Schools and we encourage them to keep
doing what they’re doing.”
Justice was joined for the ceremony by Deputy
State Superintendent of Schools Michele Blatt, who oversees
the Communities In Schools program for the West Virginia
Department of Education.
Communities In Schools aims to bring together
community partnerships and bring resources into schools to
help remove barriers to student learning with a goal of
keeping all students in school and ultimately graduating,
according to the governor’s office.....
As for Mullins, Justice said he works so hard for
Clay County. Mullins recently retired. “Mike is
instrumental in Clay County getting things that they need at
school, he has lived there his entire life, he knows the
entire county. if you want something done, just go to Mike and
let him tell you how to get that done and he’ll go to it and
get that done,” she said.
The award
ceremony was held via the ZOOM teleconference program due
to Corony Bug concerns. That's Mullins over on the left.
