600+ STAY HOME
School Board Meets
Sept 14 2020

Without a doubt,
the Corony bug has made getting schools open, a real tough job
this year. For all school systems in the nation, it's a whole
new landscape, uncharted waters. The Clayberry School Board
held a public meeting on Sept 14th. Boardsters Dave Mullins,
Dave Pierson, Cheryl White, and Susan Bodkins were there in
person with Morgy Triplett quarantining at home for this
meeting. In the peanut gallery, turn out was light for the
Pentagon based meeting. Before we get to the eyebrow raising
stuff....
Clay Elem teacher Michelle Strimel resigned
System Physical Therapist Cindy Chamberline bailed out
as well.
Here's a head scratcher. Principal Michelle Paxton
resigned from an extra duty contract as a gifted teachers at
Clay Middle. As a full time Principal at Clay Elem, how did
she find the time for an extra duty contract at some other
school? A couple years back, Superintendent Joe Paxton sought
to have his wife at the Pentagon but that was shot down
quickly. Guess, the extra $$$ had to place her somewhere else.
That's the way it works in Clayberry.
Alan Tanner unexpectedly bailed out as Vice Principal
at Clay High and returned to a math classroom and volunteer
football coach.
Replacing Tanner is Mike Kearns who is coming back from
Kanawha County duties. Kearns has worked in this county in the
past.
In the way of dollars, according to book keeper
Jennifer Paxton, tax revenues have increased so far this year
with $299,884 coming in since July 1st. For expenses, those
numbers have "skyrocketed" but those needs are covered with
corona dollars from the Feds. So far, "There's plenty of
money", according to Ms Paxton
Boardster Cheryl White inquired a substitute that was
hired a couple meetings ago. That guy was suppose to replace
math teacher Kenneth Tanner who was tossed by the way side...
politics is our guess readers. The response came from Dave
Pierson, who said, he was just a sub teacher. As a note, so
was Kenneth, KT.
Kenneth is the Dad of Allen. When Kenneth was
tossed out like a spent condom, the new guy was poised to walk
into the classroom full time. In support of his Dad, Allen
foxed their box by resigning the VP job and taking the math
slot.
OK Moms and Dads, just a couple meetings back,
Superintendent Joe Paxton said everything was in fine shape
for each rug rat to receive a used lap top or other electronic
device for online learning needs. Everything was locked and
loaded, good to go!
That ain't happening. Under questioning, Paxton
announced, those old but new to us, puters will not arrive
until some time in December. He didn't say which year!
If you're interested in our assumption.... The Pentagon
sat on their thumbs since last March and didn't order the
rascals in a timely manner. Just a darn good guess.
In other Corona related stuff...
There were lots of high fives over the work done
to get schools open on Sept 8th. It was almost a love fest.
Meals will be provided every student.
Virtual students will have to come to a nearby school to pick
up their boxed offerings.
How about those hot spot internet connections? Joe
Paxton told the assembled, although a week late in set up, the
hot spots are suppose to be working now. Suppose to be
working is the important part
Are those hot spots in any way connected to the
Frontier DSL network? Paxton, he didn't know but for sure, the
hotspots are not taking bandwidth from school networks.
How about attendance this year.
Paxton: total school population is down this year:
there's only 1100 curtain climbers in classrooms in the
county: and another 600+ getting their edumacation via the
virtual route. It wasn't so long ago, Clayberry held
closer to 2200 kids in the system.
With 600 less kids using Big Yellers, can they do
without so many bus drivers. Paxton: Absolutely not.
As of this meeting date, have any kids used the Corona
sick rooms? Paxton: Not to my knowledge.
The 32 minute gathering ended with Superintendent
Paxton reporting, kids are happy to be back in the classrooms
and really missed their teachers a bunch.
