  • July 30 am Hard to believe we're finishing up the 7th month of the year.
  • July 30 am Charleston media has been all over the story of so many WV schools in deep doo doo with the No Child Left Behind Act now nearly 2 years old. You might want to take a look at the sub standard scores for Clay County Schools. A "B" indicates trouble. Click CCHS, CMS, Ivydale, and Valley Fork
  • July 30 am The last of the baseball pictures are now over on the PHOTO page under the District 8 Champs section.  Yes , we know we've got some doubles there and we'll create the problem. Remember if you want to copy the pictures you have to give us $6000 before doing so.......

  • July 29 pm The County's real source of news and view made it our door around 1pm this afternoon. Much space was devoted this edition to yesterday's County Commission where WV Water Co made an offer to help us out of our water problems. On the home page is an image of WV Water lead speaker Dan Bickerton. Yesterday, the local VFW post asked the CCC for some $ for the lodge hall. Full details and the cost is 50 cents.
  • July 29 pm Judge Ruckman issued a verdict in the Burch vs Smarr case. According to those close, Burch came out on top of the case. Remember Burch? Last year TV 8 gave much coverage to the spray of bullets that hit Burch's home.
  • July 29 pm GO read the paper!
  • July 29 am Sometimes we hype up a public meeting just hoping to see some good come from the efforts of the elected ones. No hype this time around.
  • July 29 am Yesterday morning's Clay County Commission meeting was a banner gathering. First and most important, WV Water accepted the invitation to come and provide options to the county long without water service to the masses.  No decisions YET but lots of great commentary on what water service and operation COULD be in Clayberry. Three full columns of coverage in today's Communicator.
  • July 29 am If all goes well, the raunchy wipe sheet will be on the news stands by early afternoon. Now back to the CCC meeting ....
  • July 29 am Our Prosecutor asked for a $3000 pay raise for his office secretary. Didn't happen. He also asked for an Asst. Prosecutor ( $25,000 per year, part time) with full benefits. He said he really needs the help. Grindo got the assistant, Dan Dotson from Braxton, but no benefits for the experienced attorney
  • July 29 am County Courthouse employees were treated to a 5% pay raise yesterday.

  • July 29 am Have we mentioned water service for the Widen area of Clay County? You know, the little town with contaminated wells and raw sewage running down the streets every now and again? Two full columns on the brewing controversy in today's Communicator. 16 pages and just 50 cents. Better than canned soup!
  • July 28 am This week is starting off fast. This morning, at 10, our Clay County Commission convenes at their new time and day. The change was made to accommodate Commissioner Bragg's new work schedule in Nicholas County.
  • July 28 am Before the CCC meeting, at 9:30am, is the Small Cities Block Grant hearing in the CCC room.    Need a used puter? The CCC is selling off some old equipment this morning at 11:30am
  • July 28 am So why attend this morning's County Commission meeting? On tap is a presentation from WV Water Co. Commissioner Bragg asked the state's top water provider to come and tell the elected ones what WV Water could do for the county. WV Water has unlimited resources and manpower which could break the 6 year old log jam with providing a dependable water source for the residents.
  • July 28 am Also during the CCC meeting, new Deputy Connard Workman's resignation will be accepted and (now already back on the force) Kevin Delk will be re-appointed Deputy Sheriff.  Also this morning, the CCC will vote on Courthouse employees receiving pay raises and replace WVU Extension Office Sarah Anderson who's bailing out ( said it again Ann and Mike) and heading back to college.
  • July 28 am Oh yell, one more thing.  Prosecutor Grindo is seeking an Asst. Prosecutor and that pay raise for his secretary ( now called a legal assistant) he sought three months ago. Should be a great meeting with all the trimmings.
  • July 28 am And by the way, that's Clay Roane PSD Chair Melissa Postelwait and engineer Jim Hildruth on the home page insets.
  • July 27 am Before the weekend wrap up....
  • July 27 am Want something to do this afternoon? Head over to  Big Otter Baptist Church, Ivydale; starting at 5:00 PM.  Groups scheduled:  The Pilot Quartet; Family Ties: The Cruickshanks Family; The Smith Family; The Hamrick Brothers.  Farah too!  and others.  Refreshments will be served also.
  • July 27 am We've had quite a week in little Clayberry. Our only Town cop Buckshot got fired and he was a volunteer! Within minutes all the arrests made by Butcher and pending before Magistrate Court were dismissed. And that included the high profile case involving Danny Workman
  • July 27 am Warm temps and dry conditions filled the county this week.
  • July 27 am Our 13 14 year old All Stars put on quite  a showing during the State Championship Tournament in Charleston. In the end, alas, we lost out to 13 and 14 year olds that looked like college freshman.
  • July 27 am On Thursday Clay Roane PSD, just recovering from near bankruptcy, voted to buy a new 4 whd pick em up truck and hire 2 part timers.
  • July 27 am The Communicator was delayed until this coming Tuesday. No not some nasty puter virus but the hold was put on until after Monday's County Commission meetrin when WV Water Co is scheduled to present options for the county..... what WV Water can do for the many thirsty Clayonians long denied water service.
  • July 27 am Over in Iraq, we managed to kill Uzzy and Tuesy while their buddies killed off more of our guys in Dubbya's Oil war. The death toll climbs and climbs with no end in sight.
  • July 27 am This weekend the Clay County Agriculture Fair was held at RT Sizemore Memorial Park. 50 some animals were shown and bunches of kids walked away with ribbons and even some loot in their pockets.
  • July 26 am Hello Saturday morning and welcome aboard the great ship, SS Clayberry, setting sail for parts unknown
  • July 26 am The home page inset pictures are from the Agriculture fair now in progress.  Don't miss out on the fun over at Maysel park. The big auction is tonight. See EVENTS page for details.
  • July 26 am The listings over on the FUNERAL page are from normally from Carl Wilson Funeral Home. The family of Mabel Fay (Dawson) Pringle 86 asked us to post her notice although Wilson's isn't involved.....we've done so.
  • July 26 am  We forgot to mention in yesterday's post, during the Clay Roane PSD meeting, Thursday July 24th, the anointed ones OKed the purchase of a new 4WHD pick up truck and voted to hire 2 part time employees.
  • July 26 am in this coming Tuesday's Communicator will be the interview with Mayor Arhur Jarrett concerning Buckshot Butcher getting canned as Chief of Police. As a way of wetting your appetite and coughing up the 50 cents ... Jarrett confirmed that he asked Butcher to resign. Translation: He fired Butcher. One other note for free: Jarrett said chief of Police Butcher had done a fantastic job!
  • July 25 pm  Opppps... During this morning's post we forgot to mention the annual  picnic to be held tomorrow afternoon at Widen. For those with gray hair or no hair, the afternoon under a shade tree is a chance to remember and swap stories with friends from times gone by.
  • July 25 pm On Tuesday of this week came a little story in the Charleston Newspaper  mentioning 47 fraudulent unemployment claims and the recovery of $100,000 in funds from those caught in the cookie jar. According to the article, at least one case was from Clay County.  The 4 paragraph news gem begs for  an answer: Who in Clay County wants to work, especially, when they are sucking in unemployment checks??
  • July 25 pm When Buckshot Butcher left the police force, County Prosecutor Daniel Grindo dismissed all the outstanding arrests (5) in Magistrate Court. One of those dismissed was the charge against young Jerry Cash, fleeing from an officer. Remember our coverage of that? Cash was one of the folks drunk on  Main Street right in front of the Welfare Office and took off running in circles. Butcher gave a brief chase with the younger more agile Trooper Bailey  finally getting the upper hand on Cash.
  • July 25 am THE COMMUNICATOR IS NOT COMING OUT TODAY> WE'RE HOLDING OFF UNTIL THE BEGINNING OF THE WEEK!! TELL YOUR NEIGHBOR, TELL YOUR FRIENDS!
  • July 25 am  Makes plans to attend the Clay County Ag Fair which opens for business this afternoon and continues thru Saturday evening. Fun Fun Fun
  • July 25 am We've been talking a bunch about Town Cop Buckshot Butcher these last few days.  Maybe there's something in the air...
  • July 25 am Word came  yesterday, Deputy Connard Workman bailed out. Workman was in basic training at the State Police Academy at Institute when he quit. So who will replace Workman?  Well, just guessing but: Deputy Delk resigned from work last winter and accepted a State Police slot but flunked out of State Police Academy. The guess is, Delk will soon back dressed in black and gray.
  • July 25 am  Last night's Clay Roane PSD meeting was a short, fairly quiet, assembly. After saying they were out of debt a few weeks back, announcement came last night that  they have nearly $7000 in debt load after paying $14,000 in bills. Most troubling during the meeting was part time employees refusing to sign up for drug testing now mandated by the PSD. With water operators in short supply, the concern is what to do if the part timers quit working. No operators, no wa wa.
  • July 25 am  During the recent metal recycling days,  4 tons of aluminum, 70 tons of steel, 130 refrigerators, 86 gas tanks, and 140 car batteries were recovered and recycled. Not bad for little ole Clayberry.
  • Want to buy the ole Newton Fire Dept. building? see EVENTS page please
  • July 24 pm  Greetings world wide clickers, welcome ot the afternoon update of news in Clayberry. Remember the late Carl Triplett and that gold Cadillac he never drove over 40 miles per hour? That beautiful ride is now listed over on the CLASSIFIED page. Better hurry too, it'll go quick
  • July 24 pm Tonight at 7 is the Clay Roane PSD regular Board meeting at the CDC building across from the Courthouse.
  • July 24 pm With Buckshot Butcher now gone as Town Chief of Police, last night, Mayor King Arthur Jarrett manned the cruiser. We still trying to get first hand details but as of noon today, no such luck yet.
  • July 24 pm For our Communicator readers, we're holding off this Friday's issue until early next week, guess is, the raunchy wipe sheet will come out Tuesday morning instead of tomorrow.  Sorry for the delay but  we've got the Buckshot story  plus another that may make the wait worthwhile.
  • July 24 pm With the departure of Butcher as cop, all the pending arrests were tossed by our Prosecutor. One of those was the arrest of Prestera client Danny Workman. Of the course the controversy over the arrest continues but the big issue in the case is over how Prestera ( the old Shawnee Hills mental health agency) handles their responsibilities and client base. Many feel Prestera is doing a less than quality job. Yesterday, Trooper Bailey was heard on the scanner responding to a call of a Prestera client standing on the Pisgah bridge ready to jump. With no reports down stream of floating bodies, and no follow up chatter on the scanner, the guess is, the client had second thoughts.
  • July 24 pm Remember Donnie Kerns? Kerns worked at the Town water and sewer plant a couple years ago and lived in Two Run. Kerns had a big time truck wreck. Smashed into an interstate barrier which broke about everything in his body but his head. Best wishes for a speedy recovery at CAMC
  • July 24 pm Last year our school system was so happy to get a new roof on Clay Elem. The original roof was leaking big time and state funds covered the cost of the new covering. This past week, construction crews cut hole after hole in  the brand new roof as they installed  heating and cooling units for the school. First a new roof and then cutting holes in it remembers many of how the state road manages tax payer dollars.... first they paint new center lines and then pave the road.
  • July 24 pm On the 18th, someone tried to torch the asbestos laden green house owned by the Town of Clay and located beside the water plant. Three days ago, on Monday, the State Fire Marshall's Arson team investigated the  site.
  • July 24 pm Last week the WV PSC held a formal hearing on the County Commission's complaint against Clay County PSD buying the high dollar double wide trailer now parked on Main Street. During the hearing, Prosecutor Grindo represented the County Commission. During our brief posting of the hearing, we mentioned that Grindo did very little during the hearing in the way of raising questions and even less ( nothing) in the way of providing the PSC information or documents to support the CCC's complaint.
  • July 24 pm Seems we weren't the only ones that noticed the lackluster performance. Clay County PSD just sent a bill to the CCC to cover their lawyer bill. The idea for the bill: Since the CCC did nothing during the hearing, the PSD shouldn't have to cover attorney expense.
  • July 23 LATE LATE PM  Velma M. Douglas, 93, see FUNERAL page
  • July 23 LATE PM update Town  Chief of Police Buckshot Butcher is no longer on the job. Locals noticed the Town's two police cruisers parked at the water plant  Tuesday evening. Speculation has had it for two weeks that Butcher was a goner after the arrest of Prestera client Danny Workman.
  • July 23  LATE PM   Mayor Arthur Jarrett confirmed at 3:30 , his neighbor, Butcher was no longer in the Town's sole police officer.
  • July 23 LATE PM As for all the ticket writing and arrests made by Butcher and pending in Magistrate Court, according to Magistrate Jeff Bogg's, Prosecutor Grindo dropped all cases.
  • July 23 LATE PM Ditto for cases in Magistrate King's office.
  • July 23 LATE PM  For those following the case of weenie waiver Danny Workman, that case has been dropped as well. Workman is off the hooked and the case is now zipped up... so to speak.
  • July 23 LATE PM  We're hoping to get some interview time with the Mayor and others before the next Communicator comes out. Pictures too...  no, no, not of Danny !
  • July 23 am  Back in December, Matthew Minney sought the Clay County Prosecutor's job when Jeff Davis resigned. Minney now has that Prosecutor's job, just not here. CLICK GOT IT
  • July 23 am  For our close by clickers, stop by Clayberry this weekend and be a part of the Clay County Agriculture Fair at Maysel. Activities are now posted on the EVENTS page.
  • July 23 am  The WV unemployment rate rate rose in 42 counties in Jun 2003. No we're not at the top this time  but Wirt County is with 18.3% on the unemployment roles
  • July 23 am  Thursday brings the Clay Roane PSD Board together again at 7 pm. Always fun to watch unless you need water service and always exciting.
  • July 23 am No County Commission meeting Thursday since the meeting dates have been changed to the second and fourth MONDAY of each month. Commissioner Bragg's work schedule changed again and the new meeting times (10 am) and dates are in place to accommodate Bragg.
  • July 22 am One heck of an effort last night during the State Junior League (13-14 year olds)Tourney in Charleston as Clay took on the burley ( they had beards and some of the fans yelled out " Way to go Dad!") Madison team. After a dandy snag by center fielder Jordan A and with the fans on their feet, the bottom of the 7th inning. Clay behind by 1. Jeff K smacks a nice hit sending Trinity D home to tie  6 -6. Overtime time. The place went nuts!
  • July 22 am  After a couple drilled , Madison pulls ahead by 2. Our turn, bottom of the 8th, our last chance. Jordan A walks, Jake M beaned and goes to first. 10:45pm: We're in scoring position. Our big hitters are up, They swing, They swing,  That **##$$ ball must have had radar built into it.  Things just didn't happen as Clay, with two losses, is out of State Tournament play. The season is over and our 13 - 14 year old team can hold their heads up high for a great showing.   Moms and Dads can now get some rest, take a vacation, watch some tube and finally have a summer.
  • July 22 am For the most part the ACLU , the American Civil Liberties Union is thought of in bad light in these parts. Oh those baby killers, those communists, those people that support gay rights and those **@@ people that took Jesus out of the classroom. Here's  something different. The ACLU of WV just filed a lawsuit in Ritchie County supporting gun and property owner rights. Full details over on our ADVISORIES page.
  • July 22 am We've got a guy over on our CLASSIFIED page needing to rent a house before school starts. Can you help him out.
  • July 22 am  You should never say to a cop: I can't reach my license unless you hold my beer. And: Oh, Sorry Officer, I didn't know my radar detector wasn't plugged in.   Or: Hey you must have been doing 125 mph to keep up with me. And finally, something you should never say to a cop: Gee Officer, the last guy only gave me a warning ticket too!
  • July 22 am With ball season over, we'll get back to reporting on the happenings in beautiful Clayberry...... A bunch of us around these parts claim some native american chemistry in our background. If you'd like to do a little research , check out Don Greenes' site, click BLOOD
  • July 21 am   Celia Fay Mullins, see FUNERAL page
  • July 21 am  After receiving several emails on the question of pictures on the homepage, we have a compromise. We'll limit the home page photos to two and use no background photos. With fewer images to load, the home page should come up a  little quicker for dial up clickers. Thanks for responding.
  • July 21 am And now the bummer. We had the scorekeeper, that's Dickie on the homepage inset.  We had the batting.... We had the catching ... we had the pitching.... we had the fan support .... but  we just didn't have the points.. By the way, that's us, the Clay All Stars listed in the "home" column.
  • July 21 am As some fans said on the way out of the ball field Sunday afternoon, Sometimes you get the bear and sometimes it gets you. After winning Saturday, Clay took it on the chin Sunday afternoon in the State Tournament 13 and 14 year old division. We went down, 13 to zip. The entire afternoon it was if the team just wasn't quite there.
  • July 21 am We're not out of it yet. We have a chance tonight at 8pm when we take on the Madison club. Maybe the cooler temps in the evening will help us out a bit.
  • July 21 am  We've got a new week clickers with several public meetings and hopefully some follow up from the state arson investigators over the house fire beside the Clay water plant three nights ago.
  • July 21 am Tonight is the School Board meeting. There should be lots more shuffling of teachers and such before school gets going again. Action starts at 6pm sharp.
  • July 21 am  If you see something interesting, email us a note. Check back Tuesday morning for the baseball update and news on this week's activities. And don't forget, the pool is open!
  • July 20 am  It's Saturday afternoon. HOT! I mean Hot! Clay All Stars are in the WV State Junior League Championship tournament action in Charleston. A bunch of parents and supporters are  about ready to melt as the sun beats down.
  • July 20 am  It's the bottom of the 7th, we're at bat, one out, and the score is tied 4 to 4. All afternoon Clay looked  pretty darn good with some great field work. Jeff K worked the mound effectively.
  • July 20 am With the score tied, JD comes to the plate with Jar Head in scoring position on third. Swing. **!!@@##. Missed. JD Tries again..... The bat twangs as the ball heads for center field. Jar Head ( Jarod K) makes it home!
  • July 20 am  CLAY ALL STARS WIN 5 - 4!!!!
  • July 20 am It takes three wins to make it to the July 24th Grand Championship. Actions continues Sunday at 1:30pm. For those wanting to see first hand action. The Bigley Avenue ball diamond is easy to find. Use the Westmoreland Exit of I 79. Come down the ramp, turn left, go two blocks, turn right, go about four blocks. Just across from the Hardees. If you have trouble finding the field, roll down the window and listen for fans yelling: Gooooo CLayyyyyyy!
  • July 20am  Jessie bats.
  • July 20 am Jordan bats
  • July 20 am Franks settles down Jeff K
  • July 20 am Jake M at bat
  • July 20 am Jeff K on the mound
  • July 19 am Last night the rains came as did the thunder and balls of fire from the sky.  Around midnight the tator wagon was back. Sporadic power outages came.
  • July 19 am Five years ago the Feds gave the Town of Clay orders. As employees were tearing down the little green house beside the water plant, the Feds came in and stopped the demolition due to asbestos contamination. The Town promised to leave the house( where Richard and Barbara Williams lived for years) alone. Last night before dark the wooden structure burned. Over the scanner came word "It looks like arson". Later just after dark came the call for the WV Arson Investigation team to set up shop.
  • July 19 am And this story is growing each day. Two weeks ago Prestera client Danny Workman was arrested for peeing on the street in front of a local bank and smacking arresting officer Buckshot Butcher. Police Chief Butcher confirmed the police report. Here's the update: Two local women say they saw the incident and Workman did NOT smack, hit, shove, Butcher in anyway! The creditable witnesses have since called attorney Skaggs who is representing Workman.
  • July 19 am  A pre trial hearing is scheduled for August 5 before Magistrate King. If this goes to trial and with the women willing to testify to what they saw, Officer Butcher may be in deep doo doo.
  • July 19 am According to Mayor Jarrett (5pm Friday), Butcher was assaulted by Danny who "slapped" the Town's sole cop in the face.
  • July 19 am Earlier this week we posted word on water in the Widen area. Widen, the town time forgot, made it to the hurherld web site this week too. Click WIDEN BACKGROUND for a look see.
  • July 19 am For all you straight laced clickers, turn off the monitor now..... I see you Violet, turn it off!

  • TGIF TGIF July 18 pm  Sorry for the delay in posting but there is a killer virus spreading around the www that's able to wipe out those using Netscape as their browser. Even cleaning the system with a good anti virus program, some operation folders end up corrupted. Now back in operation,, clickers, beware
  • July 18 pm  Didn't go so well for the 9 - 10 year old Clay All Stars Wednesday evening.  The Elkins team just sneaked by our team 17 to 7.
  • July 18 pm Tomorrow, at 1:30pm, the 13 - 14 year old All Stars, that's the District 8 CHAMPS!, play the first game in the State Championship series in Charleston on the Bigley Avenue field near the Westmoreland exit of I 79.
  • July 18 pm Since last posting... Lots of new pictures have been added over on the PHOTO link, this site. New: pictures from the Metals Recycling Days from last week. Take a good close look at the pict with the big "claw" machine. That's Lynn Sizemore Romano at the controls.  New stuff under the This and That section including one of ugly ole Johnny Woooooofter. All the 9 and 10 year old Clay ball team images are now loaded on the BASEBALL 2003 page. Check out the latest pictures on the GARDEN section too.
  • July 18 pm    Two weeks ago we changed the home page and started adding ,almost daily, lots of pictures there. Four days ago we asked clickers to email a response to this question: Would you prefer a quicker loading home page with few or no pictures? So far we've had several emails preferring NO home page pictures. Send in your 2 cents worth soon, we'll make a decision this weekend. Use the email link at the bottom of this page please. Thanks
  • July 18 pm With all that out of the way, we had a real interesting Thursday July 17th. THe WV Public Service Commission responded to the County Commission's request for a formal hearing to protest Clay County PSD purchasing a double wide trailer. The hearing was held yesterday at 10 am. The hour long process really didn't address the issue but actually was to decide if the complaint could be handled by the WV PSC. Decision to come at the end of August. Clickers of this site know every once in a while, we criticize elected and appointed officials. Yesterday during the hearing, County Commission (CCC) was represented by Prosecutor Daniel Grindo. As for presenting any evidence for the (CCC), didn't happen! As for presenting any witnesses, didn't happen! As for asking a whole bunch of questions.... once again, Nothing. It was if the complainer, the County Commission wasn't even present.
  • July 18 pm Last night, Clay Roane PSD held a Special meeting to hear employee complaints on the newly approved Policy and Procedures manual. Something didn't happen here. All the background turmoil stayed right there.  Boardster Larry White did not attend, according to Board Chair Postelwait, White said he didn't want to waste his time. Boardster Glenn Sutton showed up an hour after the meeting was over. Sutton said he was told the Special meeting would begin at 7pm. When employees asked if they would be paid for attending the " attendance requested" meeting , the answer was NO. Each Board member received $75 for coming.
  • July 18 pm First word is just leaking out that volunteer Police Chief Buckshot Butcher parked the gray cruiser and resigned four days ago after demanding hospitalization coverage. Something changed, don't know what, but Butcher was seen once again on the job Thursday evening.
  • July 18 pm And finally for this TGIF post....
  • July 18 pm Buckshot Butcher arrested Prestera client Danny Workman last week. Workman was arrested for being a weeny waiver ( peed in the street in front of that little bank over in Clay) and for obstructing an officer. According to Butcher, Workman clobbered him three times. Now comes this... One lady we spoke to says she was there at during the skirmish and she did NOT see Workman punch anyone! This one is going to snowball clickers!
  • July 17 am  Got something new clickers, in addition to the 10 am WV PSC hearing over Clay County PSD buying a double wide without permission and against the wishes of the County Commission......
  • July 17 am Just announced is a special meeting of Clay Roane PSD TODAY at 5 pm in the CDC building on Main Street. Seems issues on the newly implemented policy and procedures manual are at hand. During the last meeting, one employee, Bobby Burdette was formally reprimanded while part time workers refused to agree to the new manual. Come in out of the heat, this meeting should be interesting to watch. See you at 5!
  • July 17 am With school opening in a just a  couple of weeks, yesterday's Charleston Daily Mail offered some insight into all the confusing new phrases used by School officials.  click, DOUBLE SPEAK
  • July 17 am With the death toll now 150 in Dubbya's War, military leaders are just now admitting how costly the oil war is becoming. From Reuters News comes first admission of  Iraq  being a guerilla war.
  • July 17 am  There's not been much talk on the Widen water project in the last few months. There is a reason and it's the same reason very little gets done in Clayberry. The big shots want and plan to string a water line from Birch River thru the back country and into the impoverished Town of Widen.  Paying for such a project will be very costly to the water customers that hook up. While the big dogs are pushing for this unaffordable offering....
  • July 17 am   Some, emphasis SOME, Widen locals has come up with another plan. This plan would tap the 2 million gallons a day of fresh, absolutely drinkable water freely flowing  from an under mine site. Total cost to harness this resource?  Almost nothing and sense the water supply is uphill from the Town, no costly pumps would be needed to serve the town. Planners have said during earlier public meetings, the cost to operate such a facility would be around $5 per month, per customer.   Makes too much sense doesn't it?
  • July 17 am Behind the scenes the  do gooders from Nicholas County ( Birch River) are forcing the unaffordable high dollar water line project on people and stymieing the common sense approach plan of the few thinking locals!
  • July 17 am And one more Doctor story. This one from Steve Swanson from Cornellis Ohio:  While acquainting myself with a new elderly patient, I asked, "How long have you been bedridden?" After a look of complete confusion she answered..."Why, not for about twenty years, when my husband was alive."
  • July 16 pm  Tonight at 8:15 the Clay All Star 9 and 10 year olds take on the Elkins Blue club seeking a berth to the Little League State Championship. Action takes place in Elkins. Since the tourney is single elimination, the Clay team has to win tonight to stay in contention.  IF victorious , their next game is Thursday evening at 8:15pm   Go Clayyyyyyyyyyyyy!
  • July 16 pm The big kids, the Junior Little League All Stars head to the State Tournament this Saturday in Charleston held at the Bigley Avenue field. Go Clayyyyyyyyyyyyy!
  • July 16 pm And Yes that is Dixie Jarvis' sunflower on the home page.
  • July 16 pm We need some answers clickers. Three weeks ago we started adding new pictures on the homepage on a pretty much daily basis. Doing so really slows down dial up customers' loading the page. We've received some complaints over the slow loading condition. What do you want us to do, here's the question: Are you OK with the slow loading and lots of photos or should we limit the homage pictures to say just one? • July 16 am As for the home page shots, that Earl Long, Keith Mr. Happy King and Homer Triplett in the background from their last Clay County PSD meeting. Those three and their actions to buy a $60,000 trailer for office space will be the center of attention this Thursday at 10 am at the Courthouse as they explain their actions to the WV Public Service Commission. Open to the public and bring your own popcorn.  And Yes, no matter what Paige Willis says, that is a picture of MY tomato plant taken July 11.... and about the only thing left in my garden since the deer herd took it over.
  • July 16 am That other photo  comes from Town and Country Diner who are now providing a catering business in the county.
  • July 16 am High Speed internet is new for this county with few hooked up. Yesterday, from noon to about 10pm, those few lucky subscribers had to sit on their thumbs as Frontiernet was down leaving many of us DSL subscribers and dial up customers in the lurch and in denial.
  • July 16 am In the last edition of the Communicator came a letter to the editor, a "chatter" as we call em,  about Elk Power Co. electric service in the county. The writer was critical of performance during the many outages. Long time Elk Power Supervisor Leonard Williams was all torqued up over the letter and said on Monday, he planned to speak with the writer and then write a letter of his own.

  • July 16 am  From Dr Mark McDonald in San Antonio TX:  A man comes into the ER and yells; "My wife's going to have her baby in the cab!" I grabbed my stuff, rushed out to the cab, lifted the lady's dress, and began to take off her underwear. Suddenly I noticed that there were several cabs, and I was in the wrong one.
  • July 16 am  From Dr Richard Bynes, Seattle Washington :  At the beginning of my shift I placed a stethoscope on an elderly and slightly deaf female patient's anterior chest wall. "Big breaths," I instructed. "Yes, they used to be," remarked the patient.
  • July 16 am And yet one more, this one from  Cleveland Ohio: One day I had to be the bearer of bad news when I told a wife that her husband had died of a massive myocardial infarct. Not more than five minutes later, I heard her reporting to the rest of the family that he had died of a "massive internal fart."

  • July 15 am Mark on your calendar for July 17th, this Thursday. Over at the Courthouse, the WV Public Service Commission will be hearing the County Commission's concerns over the Clay County PSD's purchase of the double wide trailer now setting on Main Street. Should be a nice way to spend the morning. The hearing and action are both free.
  • July 15 am County officials like to brag about how well the educational system prepares students for the real world. Of course employers in the state know different. Often, high school graduates come to the workplace with diploma in hand and without basic math skills like division and subtraction.
  • July 15 am Now, even the big dogs in Charleston are admitting the current educational system has short comings. ACT scores indicate a majority of WV high school graduates scored a dismal 16 out of  a possible 36 on the math section of the national exam. Not much better and still below the national average, on science, reading, and english.   The next time our local school system officials put on the dog and pony show for you, don't believe them.
  • July 14 am In real baseball action, the small fries, the 9 and 10 year old Clay Little League All Stars are heading to Elkins after snagging the title in local action over at Dundon Field. • July 13 am Last night high winds, strong winds, and heavy downpours were predicted before midnight. Fortunately for us, that didn't happen. Just one note before our weekly wrap up. We forgot to mention something we noticed during Grand Jury indictments. With the metal detector going full blast, lots of cops around the court room, and the boys in orange chained and shackled , it sure looked like Prosecutor Grindo was packing heat under his sport coat. Yelp, unless that was some big arss cell phone, he was carrying a large framed hand gun under his sport coat.
  • July 13 am The week went bad for Prestera client and local street character Danny " Can I have quarter?" Workman. According to Officer Butcher, Workman doled out three punches before being arrested for weenie waving in front of the Clayberry Bank on Main Street. Workman is in real doo doo this time around.

While in public, hard feelings spilled over with employee Bobby Burdette given a written reprimand for insubordination to a Board member.

  • July 12 am  Also mentioned in the paper is a 2 hour secret time during the Clay Roane PSD meeting. So what do you do for nearly two hours and then come out and say no decisions were made. If this last secret time is like earlier secret sessions, much time is spent deciding how to keep info from the public, arm twisting to find out who leaked info to the news, and blood brother style creeds to keep the public in the dark.
  • July 12 am  Enjoy the weekend, kiss the kids, and drink a cold one. It's summer time!
  • July 11 am So what happened during last night's Clay Roane PSD meeting? For almost two hours the peanut gallery including Commissioner's Triplett and Sams sat and waited for THIS to open. That's right a nearly two hour long secret meeting. And you guessed it, afterwards, they said not one decision had been made during secret time. Not one!
  • July 11 am The meeting last three hours with much evidence of internal bickering over last weekend's emergency meeting called by Chair Melissa Postelwait to address Chief Water Operator Bobby Burdette's insubordination. Full details in today's Communicator of course, but nice note.
  • July 11 am According to the Clay Roane PSD Board, all bills are now current and the $40,000 debt has been erased.
  • July 11 am Don't forget today and tomorrow are the last two days to bring your old metal junk over to Pierson's Saw Mill for disposal. They even take old car batteries and spouses.

That was the day that it rained like crazy and the roads flooded almost immediately. Many folks couldn't get out to hear Bluegrass Harmony from Putnam County. They're coming back. See EVENTS page for details!
  • July 10 pm Look outside. See all that piled up junk? Those old car batteries? How about that car body setting over on cinder blocks? That pile of rusty metal roofing? Today, Friday and Saturday are metal recycling days for Clayberry. Take it over to the metal site, Pierson Lumber NOW. Much nicer than tossing over a hillside too.
  • July 10 am The front page look is a harvest bounty in the making. With few bugs to deal with, the half runners are being picked with the corn not far behind. That's enough of the nice stuff. We have news today
  • July 10 am According to the WV PSC web site, John Habjan's three gas company's are being forced into receivership for failure to comply with numerous complaints from local customers including the School system Here's an excerpt: IT IS THEREFORE ORDERED that Commission Staff, within sixty (60) days of the date of this order, file a receivership proceeding against Valley Gas Company, Beechy Gas Company, and Wagner Gas Company, in the appropriate circuit court. Full details in this Friday's edition of the Communicator.
  • July 10 am Back a few weeks ago, Deputy Slack arrested Danny Workman for begging for quarters on the streets of Clay. Workman is a client of the old Shawnee Hills now Prestera. The Sheriff's Dept. as well as Magistrate Court caught total H over the incident with most even more peeeed off at Shawnee Hills for NOT going bond $.
  • July 10 am Four days ago, Danny was arrested again, this time by Town Cop Buckshot Butcher. "Weenie Waiver" Workman was arrested for public indecency and obstructing an officer after peeing on the sidewalk in front of that little bank over in Clay in broad daylight. Workman clobbered Butcher while Butcher was trying to get him in the vehicle.  Butcher's nose is all bent and cobbled up!
  • July 10 am  Obstructing an Officer is a very serious charge with jail time involved! Workman could be in some deep stuff on this one.  Shawnee Hills, Prestera, is being paid to be in charge of Workman and improve his living skills with training. The question that begs to be answered: What in the H is Shawnee Hills doing with all those $.
  • July 10 am Also big news!!!! 29 indictments came back as true bills yesterday from Grand Jury proceedings. One issued to Tonya Salsbury is for murder in the second degree. Tonya is charged in the murder death of her husband, Chad, last Sept. out Widen way.

Clay beat the pants off Summersville "A" All Stars Sunday evening. All championship action is at Dundon Field.
  • July 8 pm  Lets talk about something that is just starting to grow. In the July 7am post down below, word came from the WV PSC that the Ok was given for Clay Roane PSD to purchase an $8500 'puter program for monthly billing. Of course, the PSD purchased the program prior to PSC OK and without formal bidding. That is old news
  • July 8 am From that WV PSC paperwork comes the following:  According to Clay-Roane, its District Chair was in contact with Staff on several different occasions. On one such instance, Staff suggested that the billing service could be accomplished by Clay County and offered to negotiate the Agreement. The District Chair was later informed by Staff that Clay County was unwilling to undertake the billing and accounting for Clay-Roane. Thereafter, Clay-Roane stated that it  followed Staff's recommendation by contacting the provider of Computer and Software services for the  Districts slated for consolidation, which then led to the contract and financing at issue.

  •      Clay-Roane stated in its Response that as a result of Clay County's unwillingness to take over the  billing and accounting, Clay-Roane believed the situation to be an emergency and with no alternative, voted to enter into the contract.
  • July 8 am Here's the clincher. Just after this morning's Clay County PSD meeting, Office Manager Cindy S said that she had NOT denied any billing requests but rather, a request had been made by Clay Roane PSD , and she had nver said , Clay County would charge $1 per customer bill per month for doing such monthly billing for Clay Roane PSD.  Cindy also said the WV PSC had just recently contacted her doing some follow up questioning. Maybe covering their tracks?  A great big Hmmmmmmmmmmmm ....  That full WV PSC document can now be found over on the ADVISORY page, this site. Watch this one to either grow or get covered up like a cat in a litter box.
  • July 8 am Also, Clay County PSD is in their new double wide trailer on Main Street. Pretty nice too. That's the trailer the PSD bought without WV PSC OK and against the wishes of the County Commission. There is a full blown PSC hearing on the complaint July 17 at the Courthouse.
  • July 8 am Did you make it thru the night? How about your computer? Last night's lightning played havoc on power and telephone service in Clayberry. For most in the county, both utilities went off around 10pm Monday evening. Power crews were spotlighting the overhead in the Two Run area by 11pm last night as Sheriff Fields and Deputy Connard Workman kept an eye out for looters. .
  • July 8 am Around 3 am, service had been restored for the central part of the county.
  • July 8 am  Last night's District 8, 13 - 14 year old,  Championship game in Glenville made it into the third inning before some real evil looking storm clouds brought in big time rain and lightning.  20 minutes of the wet stuff left the playing field way less than adequate for Championship activities.  Clay was ahead 1 to zip  when called. Action continues tonight ( if weather permits) at 6pm.
  • July 8 am Don't forget to check out the little guys, 9 - 10 year olds in Championship action, over at the Dundon ball field.
  • July 8 am Maybe the most important meeting this week happens in the morning as the WV Infrastructure Council meets at WV State College, 9 am.  Those folks handle oversight and $ duties for most every government expansion project in the state including wa wa projects.
  • July 7 am Greetings early morning clickers, if you can skip work today, you oughta. Go fishin'. The Elk River is emerald green and lookin' good.
  • July 7 am The front page background shot is the old, now vacated State Road garage at Two Run. The lot and newly reroofed structure would make a great business incubator site for economic development. Here in Clayberry, such opportunities are often cast aside as a wishful thinkings and the Clay power brokers grab up such properties and just sit on them. Let's see what happens this time around.
  • July 7 am Interested in a reaaaaaaaaaaaal car. Check the top listing on the CLASSFIED page now!
  • July 7 am Our loving and caring School Board meets tonight in regular session beginning at 6pm.
  • July 7 Thre months ago, over the objections of many in the community, Clay Roane PSD purchased an $8500 computer billing program without formal bids. Even County Commissioners Sams and Triplett publicly expressed outrage over the untimely purchase. Even the regulatory body for public service districts, the WV Public Service Commission objected to such a purchase.
  • July 7 am  My how things change. Last week the WV PSC gave the blessings to purchasing without their permission. The complete decision can be found on the PSC web site. To make the trip over there, just click No Oversight Provided
  • July 6 pm We've got part of the story on the Clay Roane PSD emergency meeting last night.  Background: Last week Chief Water Operator Bobby Burdette was to have fixed a water leak affecting customers in the Queen Shoals service area. Without repairing the leak, Burdette left the site and the customers are still without water service. With calls coming in, the PSD met Saturday evening.
  • July 6pm Boardsters present last night at 5 were: Chair Melissa Postelwait, Gary Whaling, and Glenn Sutton. Three motions were made and passed: 1 Hire Phillip Linger to fix the leak; 2 Write up Burdette for insubordination and place in his personnel file; 3 Demote Burdette from Chief Operator and put Jennifer Traub in that lead position.  Burdette was not present during the meeting.
  • July 6 pm Burdette was not fired, but rather,  removed from management but left on day shift as a Class II operator. Just one regular meeting ago, Burdette was told he could not be Chief and work a night  shift. That the "Chief" person had to work the day shift. Jennifer Traub works the night shift and is the new Chief. Now, with last night's decision in hand, Burdette remains on day shift. Now there's a great big Hmmmmmmmmmmm...
  • July 6 am  The good and the bad...
  • July 6 am  Last night the Clay All Stars cleared the last hurdle, Clay's 13 - 14 year old beat Summersville 7 to 5. Clay is heading  for the District 8 Championship Game against Gilmer Monday night 6pm! Clay remains undefeated. They can taste a victory in the making!
  • July 6 am And now the bad. Clay Roane PSD called an emergency meeting yesterday. Yes, yesterday, Saturday. Since an emergency meeting doesn't require an advance agenda to be posted and since we didn't make the meeting, we can only guess: The meeting was called to discuss recent water outages within the system and/or immediate discipline action of an employee. As soon as we figure out what went on, we'll post.
  • July 6am We're not quite ready for a weekend update clickers. We're waiting on word from that emergency meeting held yesterday.
  • July 5 am  The 4th was hot and humid here in Clayberry. Some sat on their porches fanning themselves while lots of others became fans themselves during the District 8 13-14 year old Tournament in Glenville. Our Clay team remains undefeated in Tournament action with yesterday's score on the home page as we shot past Gilmer!  Changing pitchers four times during the 4th inning didn't help. Our guys were sluggers with good base running to boot yesterday!
  • July 5 am Action continues this afternoon in Glenville at 3pm with the Championship game coming Monday evening. Keep you fingers crossed, if the hits keep coming, Clay may be the next District 8 Champs and heading for the State Tournament! Undefeated clickers UNDEFEATED!!

More arrests expected. So far around $20,000 in goods have been recovered.
  • July 4th Last night, the  13 - 14 year old Clay Junior League All Stars put it all over Cowen/Webster  16 to Zip. So far no team has scored against the Clay team!  Action continues at 4 this afternoon in the District 8 Play Offs in Glenville.

  • July 4th am It's always interesting to see who is setting up business in Clayberry. One brand new corporation is Victory Petroleum Resources Corp. Licensed in the last week of June, the big cheese for the outfit is none other than Homer Graham Jr.  Remember Homer? He's the old CCHS Band Director who in the middle of a semester hurriedly shag arsed out of town.  Also mentioned in the official paperwork is past Prosecutor Jeff Davis. Since there are 10,000 shares of stock to be sold for Victory, watch for big time sales pitches in the near future.  To see for yourself click HOLD ON TO YOUR WALLET Once there, just click all the little buttons to view the details.

Sams wanted her fired since she was suing the Commission over the hiring of Prosecutor Daniel Grindo by the Commission. Sams didn't get his way and resigned.
  • July 3 am During the last CCC meeting BDA Chair Paige Willis invited Sams back into the fold and said no one within the BDA had asked for the Sams resignation. It'll be interesting this evening to see if Sams shows
  • July 3 am Also this evening the Clay 13 - 14 year old Junior League Baseball team takes on Gilmer after beating the pants off the Braxton team. Action starts at 5:30 in Glenville. Come out and support the next District Champs, Clay County!

  • July 3 am Wouldn't it be nice to have a place in the county locals could sell their produce and such? Well, we don't.
  • July 3 am Clayberry is  too unorganized to even have a farmer's market.  Not so in Calhoun County. Check out the big farmer's market announcement over on our EVENTS page.
  • July 2 pm We've got a lost German Shepherd dog. Looks like Rin Tin Tin but has crippled rear hind quarters. Duke was lost near the Baron Creek Methodist Church. See him, please call Whimpy or Chick at 548-4297
  • July 2 pm The school system hype is always, we don't have room, we need more class room space..... Over at Clay Middle School, a well equipped classroom, nice windows, desks, nicely painted, and just across the hallway from the cafeteria on the main floor, has been converted to a weight lifting room. That right, much needed prime classroom space now turned into a weight room used but one period a day. The next time Link and gang say they need to pass a Levy for more school space maybe you should reply," Why don't you just use the space you got more wisely?"
  • July 2 am Town Cop Buckshot Butcher showed up before yesterday's Town Council meeting with a mean black eye and a busted nose. No not his Mother or some bad hombre, while practice shooting a rifle, some part of the firing pin went crazy leaving Butcher unconscious and battered.
  • July 2 am Town Council met in regular session yesterday afternoon, Guess how much money came in in June from parking tickets? $12.
  • July 2 am Johnny Woooofter owns the road going to the sewer plant. Wooofter addressed Council on a 2000 agreement signed by then Mayor Jamie and brokered by Joyce Gibson. The agreement calls for Council to pay Wooofter $10 per year for use of his private road and for Council to widen and pave the 12 foot wide easement. To date, according to the Wooofter lad, neither have been done.
  • July 2 am New to Council, Billie Jane Zegeer questioned whether this new Council would even have to abide by their predecessor's document. Council person Betty Murphy, after Wooofter left the room, told her fellow elected officials: It really doesn't matter, we don't have the $ to pave the road anyway. New man at the table Frank Childers tried to get Council to just pay the past due $20. Didn't happen
  • July 2 am By the way, that's Council on the home page and the big ugly mug in the inset photo is Mayor "King" Arthur Jarrett. Thought you may want to print those out and hang them on a stick in your garden.
  • July 2 am  One more note on that sewer plant. Raise your hand if you remember this.  Town Council built and operated that new plant on property they didn't even own! True and only in Clayberry.
  • July 2 am Need  a rabies shot for your dog, cat, spouse or politician? State law says every dog and cat MUST be vaccinated. See EVENTS page for details.
  • July 1 am New month clickers and we're trying something different on the home page. Clickers helped pay for a digital camera back in Feb. 2003 and now we're going to try and use it a little "quicker". Our plan is to add faster turn around pictures on the home page. If you see one you like, just right click on it and save to your puter. Better do it as you see them, our plan is to change them  often.
  • July 1 am In last Friday's Communicator we reported Clay County was without a licensed County Coroner. Oh Boy, did we ever hear from Mary Hanshaw.
