MAY 2003 NEWS

  • May 31 am Today is the big day for Clay High Seniors. Today is Graduation time beginning at 10 am.
  • May 31 am  The BOIL WATER ORDER issued by Clay County PSD has been lifted. Drink, Sip, Bath time, brush your teeth. And boy, brushing teeth with boiling hot water really hurt!
  • May 31 am  Quiet clickers. That's what it is here in Clayberry. Little is shaking and talk >
  • Transfer interrupted!

tch for something to break loose soon.
  • May 31 am  Have a nice weekend. New stuff added to the events page and a bunch more over on CLASSIFIED too
  • May 31 am Clay Roane PSD leadership has said time in and time out, we're cutting costs.  Of course one has to wonder how so much money can be spent in one month for mileage reimbursements. Over 600 dollars?
  • May 31 am Of course, if you want to talk reimbursements, over at the Health Dept., $8000 has been budgeted for employee mileage reimbursements while only $1200 was budgeted for the agency's 3 company vehicles for the whole darn year.
  • May 30 am That BOIL WATER ORDER continues for Clay County PSD water customers in the Big Otter Ivydale sections of the county.
  • May 30 am Years ago Grandparents would often say after a missile launch or walk in outer space, "That's the reason our weather is so messed up!  They poked another hole in the clouds!!!!!!!!!!!!!" The rain continues in Clayberry with most baseball games canceled over the last 6 weeks or so.
  • May 30 am Remember, the Communicator is not coming out today but instead TUESDAY!!
  • May 30 am Put your thinking hats on. Remember back last fall, the first part of December when CAEZ tried to sell the filter making equipment of FIlcon Manufacturing? They went after and thought they had secured a court order allowing for the same? Only later did they get a butt chewing from Judge Alsop for their actions. During Court time Judge Alsop openly questioned the legality of the auction! Back during the cold Dec morning, the auction was canceled due to the legal issues.
  • May 30 am Here's the news, Last week an auction of Filcon equipment was announced by the Roane County Sheriff Todd Cole for June 9th. Sure looks like, if  they couldn't get it sold in this county by this Circuit Court system, they just move it to another!
  • May 29 pm How about an afternoon update clickers
  • May 29 pm First, Don't go running to the newsstand FRiday afternoon to buy your Communicator. It won't be there. We're holding it up until Tuesday! Tuesday. Someone please tell Johnny Wooooofter and Norman Wilson please. That's Tuesday. The delay could be because we're tired and lazy or.....
  • May 29 pm We won't to get new stuff in like, This morning Judge  Evans sentenced Tattoo Vince Golosow to his natural life behind bars. Vince spoke and said he  did NOT kill his friend Judd Reid. But then it gets good. After sentencing and with a crowd waiting outside the back glass door of the Roane County Courthouse, Vince got some words in.
  • May 29 pm With 12 gauge armed Correctional Officers everywhere, Vince was just inside the glass door. He was looking directly and the look was not a happy one as the lady beside the ace cub reporter understood what Vince was saying, Vince said, " I'm going to eat that M.F.er!" Now who was he talking about? Full details in this coming Tuesday's Communicator including a photo of the "look"  that will send chills up your back!
  • May 29 pm Hey one other note from the Vince saga. Remember back during jury deliberations, the jury was out all of Friday evening and Saturday and Monday trying to make a decision? While Vince sat there waiting to hear his fate, Vince, read the Communicator!. Pretty Cool!
  • May 29 pm  Tonight is a specially called Solid Waste Meeting at their Main Street Clay digs. There's a public hearing at 5 followed by a regular Board meeting at 6. Be there or be square
  • May 29 pm And one final post from Golosow's sentencing this morning, Vince said he planned to appeal the decision!
  • May 29am  BOIL WATER ORDER CONTINUES FOR BIG OTTER AND IVYDALE AREAS Boil it before using!
  • May 29 am Don't forget, tonight is the big water meeting for those 78% of the county without "city" water service. See EVENTS page for details
  • May 29 am And the rains came last night along with lots of thunder. The potato cart was certainly upended.
  • May 29 am  Congressional Shelly Moore Capito made her way to the Clayberry Courthouse Thursday afternoon. Nothing formal and no nice big checks handed out. Capito told the 25 or so in attendance her agenda in Congress and politely listened to funding ideas from locals. Specifically she spoke on developing the Maysel Park and how the Park could be an economic boost for the county.
  • May 29 am For our Widen WV clickers, this one is for you. Ms Capito also heard about the need for  funding for Widen to have safe clean drinking water. For those that don't know, up hill from Widen flows 2 million gallons of fresh clean ready to drink water. Rick Proctor and others have been working on funding to tap into this water supply so Widenettes can be provided potable wa wa. About three Springs ago, our County Health Dept. witnessed raw sewage running down the streets of Widen and  most likely back into the water wells. Yuck Yuck.
  • May 29 am Over on our ADVISORY page is the posting on the $175,000 + coming into Clay compliments of Legislative Budget Digest funding. Roane County was a big winner in the give away. Click on the Roane Times/Record web page for details.
  • May 29 am Tattoo Vince Golosow heads back into the Court room this morning at 9 for sentencing.
  • May 29 am  As for the Town of Clay Election June 10th, there's been a change. All voting will be done at the Clay Fire House contrary to published reports in that little paper over in Clay said.  For those interested in elections, keep your eyes open. Have you noticed all the King Arthur for Mayor signs disappearing around town? One day they're up, the next day, nothing left but the wooden stack.
  • May 29 am This last week of the month is pretty dead as far as public meeting coverage. But of course there's always something going on like last Sunday evening a little after 8 pm when scanner listeners heard a call come in on a domestic altercation at Becky and Bobby Burdette's house on Elkhearst Road. Bobby is the Chief Water Operator at the Procious Water Plant. Now real details came over the scanner but  Becky was seen afterwards sporting a big black eye. She may have bumped into a door knob of course.
  • May 29 am Our crime spree continued last weekend as the Clay High Driver's Ed car was vandalized and a passenger side window broke out.
  • May 29 am And has been the case for the last three weeks or so, field trips, movies, bowling alley trips, days off for good test scores, trips to ball games, the entire educational process shut down over a month ago as the SAT 9 testing concluded. Clay High Graduation is slated for this Saturday morning.
  • May 29 am In this Friday's Communicator we've got the salaries of the COurthouse employees plus those from the Ambulance Service. Paper should be out around 4 pm Friday.
  • May 28 am Ivydale and Big Otter water customers of Clay County PSD, a BOIL WATER ORDER has been issued.
  • May 28 am Yesterday afternoon sometime after 4pm a water main popped near the Cash camp on Elk River. Only after walking the line was the break discovered. Customers in that section of the service area have been out of wa wa since then.
  • May 28 am For your protection a BOIL WATER ORDER has been issued for Big Otter and Ivydale areas until further notice!!!
  • May 28 am Down below in the posting on Police Chief Butcher doing a nice dead for a young stranger, we got the name wrong. The correct name for the wayward hitchhiker, the recipient of Clayberry's niceness is: Edward Danneman Hernandez.
  • May 28 am Remember the street fight May 21st. Cash vs Hilderbrand?  Just got word that Orville Hilderbrand received  an  eviction notice last Saturday from his Main Street Clay home.
  • May 28 am Over in Minor League action, Procious has won every game and most of them by double digit figures!
  • May 28 am With Spring over and Summer approaching fast, we've posted our last entry on the SPRING 2003 section of the PHOTO link. Check out the beautiful and quite rare lady slippers near the bottom.
  • May 28 am  More shots have been added to the This and That section on the PHOTO page. Enjoy.
  • May 28 am Have you been watching the TOwn of Clay Election action?  Incumbent Mayor King Arthur has this small little signs stuck here and there. Unfortunately for King Arthur, they're disappearing quicker than he can put them up. His opponent Glen  Nichols has much bigger and more colorful posters stuck in several yards around town.  The election is June 10th.
  • May 28 am It is anticipated that many municipal residents will come out and vote this time around. Three elections ago, locals were NOT notified of the election until AFTER election day!
  • May 27 am   It's hard to believe that we're almost ready to complete the fifth month of the year. You know what time it is? It's time to remove strawberry blossoms, plant sweet potatoes, harvest asparagus, turn the compost and cut that **^!! grass again
  • May 27 am  About 99% of the time, we give people double H at this site, mostly dumb bunny leaders and politicians.  Here's a change, a nice story for once
  • May 27 am  A young, California native, Andrew Hernandez hitch hiked into Clay, Sunday, mid day.  Since May 3rd he had used his thumb to make it from Los Angeles on his way to Lancaster PA. He he was penniless and stinky tired. His feet were bleeding. Town Cop Butcher spotted him, checked him out via the radio ( no warrants against him), and figured out this guy needed some help.
  • May 27 am Butcher got the 20 something kid a room in town and set out to find him some traveling money. By Monday mid day, over $200 had been rounded up including a Greyhound ticket ($103.00) to Lancaster. Butcher, after feeding  him breakfast at his own table, drove the now cleaned up Hernandez including new clean socks over doctored up feet, to the Greyhound station in Charleston. The place was closed down!!!!!!!! Butcher tried the police station to no avail and finally came upon the men's shelter at the Union Mission. The Minister there agreed to get the fellow to the bus station when the place reopened and agreed to give him the traveling $ ONLY when Hernandez stepped on the bus.
  • May 27 am According to Hernandez, he had slept beside roadways , under bridges, and in culverts along the way. and , he had never seen such generosity as he saw in Clayberry. Who gave to the cause besides Buckshot Butcher? John Osborne's Church, Danny Sizemore, Don Grey's family, Jim and Kathy Knotts, and Delta Corporation.
  • May 27 am Nice to know all of Clayberry doesn't wait for  a homeless guy to get killed before donating to his cause.
  • May 27 am  And who else was the other big winner this past weekend? Clay County's Mack Samples of course!  Samples won the Vandalia Award in Charleston during the 27th Annual Vandalia Gathering. Most remember Samples as the long time WVU Extension Agent in the county and darn good fiddle player to boot.
  • May 27 am Samples was the guy that took on corruption at  Glenville College which cost him his  administrative position. Later, during a media frenzy which exposed the dirty under belly of Glenville administration, it was apparent, Samples stood his principles and paid the cost of doing such but came out on top at the end!
  • May 27 am Samples received the top award for his year's of dedicated service in preserving traditional life and music in West Virginia. Mack and his band, the Samples Brothers, can be heard each and every Friday on Clay FM.
  • May 27 am So much for all that nice sweat crap, back to life in Clayberry....
  • May 27 am  Since this is the fifth week of the month, few public meetings are planned. BUT, on the Thursday, Clay County PSD is holding a meeting for all the foot draggers who haven't signed up for water service or haven't signed their  contracts for water service. Without the signatures, the long awaited Lizemore, Fola, Tucker's Bottom water line extension project cannot go to bid.
  • May 27 am Behind the scenes, some are worried locals will decide not to accept "city" water service due to high costs and the many boil water orders experienced by those already hooked up to water service. That Special meeting notice can be found over on t he EVENTS page, this site.
  • May 26 pm  On Saturday we noted that we too were taking a holiday and there wouldn't be new postings until the 27th, this can't wait.
  • May 26 Here in Clayberry we're covered with arson, people taking rocks and beating Joey Crow nearly too death, Murder Mountain, and even a dead body showing up half buried last Oct. Last night, at closing time, Mildred Bullard was closing her Maysel Exxon station down for the night and with the money bag in hand, was near her car. A man came up, pushed her inside the car and ran off with the money bag containing a big wad of cash. Fortunately, Ms Bullard wasn't hurt and cops reacted pretty quick.
  • May 26 pm  Here's the way it looks right now: Two people were waiting in the tall grass near the church near Bullard's Exxon. After stealing the loot ( over $5000), they high tailed it away in their vehicle. Green Shirts have one guy in custody on charges relating to a Kanawha County burglary. Sources close say he may be half the thug team in the Bullard's heist last night.
  • May 26 pm  OK Clayberry, here's our chance to shine. Over on the ADVISORY page is a posting of a family in real need after a fire took everything they owned.
  • May 26 pm Now we'll get back to holidaying until Tuesday sometime!
  • May 24 pm Greetings Saturday mornings clickers of the news page. With the sun out and cool temps,  Memorial Day weekend is looking beautiful in Clayberry land.  We're taking a couple days off. Unless there is some big hairy emergency, expect no new postings until Tuesday morning early. Enjoy your time off and dry weather while it lasts.
  • May 24 pm $175,500.00 just got appropriated for Clayberry. The Budget Digest funds will trickle into the county during photo ops over the next 6 months or so. The winners of the grab are posted over on the ADVISORY page.
  • May 24 pm Before calling it quits for a couple of days.....
  • May 24 pm Over at Clay Middle School and as the year comes to a close: Sherry Sizemore won the Principles Award; Jamie Kearns names Class Salutatorian; And Golden Horseshoe winners are Sherry Sizemore, Jamie Kearns, and Rikki Taylor.   For our High School Seniors, Friday was their last test and they are out the door. Graduation Ceremony is  Next Saturday morning, a week from today.
  • May 24 pm Needing water service? There is a special meeting next week for folks hoping to get water service and live in the Fola, Lizemore, Indore areas of the county. See EVENTS page for more.
  • May 24 pm Last Thursday evening Clay Roane PSD met in regular session. Nothing too wild and no yelling or gnashing of teeth. But, still some interesting stuff.

  • Transfer interrupted!

PSD has been tightening its belt and reducing costs. Debt load has gone down. Some things like employee $ and overtime spending are tougher to handle. Here's an example. After some strong questioning from in attendance Commissioner Peter Triplett, it came to light, 44 hours of overtime was paid to employees in April.  44 hours is less than paid the month earlier. Isn't that nice?   BUT, during that same period, 177 hours was paid to part time water operators meaning the part timers are logging a bunch of extra work time. Much more than what 32 hour a week max. part timers had been receiving. Sort of the shell game. Same dollars , just in a different line item.
  • May 24 pm Even more concerning is: The Procious Water Plant is now pumping over 19 hours per day. Our WV PSC told Clay Roane PSD ( owners of the Procious water plant) to keep the water pumping times down around 16 hours per day or risk funding for water line extensions projects and the WV Health Dept. permits that allow such water line extension projects. With pump times hovering at 19 hours a day, Clay Roane  is risking another moratorium on new water service!
  • May 24 pm In addition to paying for gasoline for the company truck, a bunch of money is being paid out for mileage expenses to employees. With that figure around $500 per month, Clay Roane PSd could justify a monthly payment for a new company truck!
  • May 24 Remember back three years ago, under Mayor Joyce Gibson, when the Town of Clay had to borrow $50,000 just to keep the doors open and stay out of bankruptcy? That loan came due in April 2003.  Official word came yesterday, .... thru some artful wording by current Town Recorder Betty Murphy, that $50,000 has been forgiven. The Town does NOT have to pay it back!!!!
  • May 24 pm   And a note on another PSD in Clayberry. Back three weeks ago, Clay County PSD presented paperwork to our County Commission. The Office Manager told the three blind mice, the paperwork was the long awaited 2002 Clay County PSD Annual Audit. An official audit is needed from each PSD in  the county before any plants can be built, any water line extensions can begin or for that matter, the PSDs could be consolidated.
  • May 24 pm That Audit was not an audit but rather a WV Public Service Commission mandated annual report. Each PSD was told over 18 months ago by Gert Bakker from the PSC, an annual report is just a compilation of number and is NOT an audit and would NOT serve as the mandated audit. Will we ever learn?
  • May 23 am Oh Yes, we ought to be talking about all the meeting action from Thursday BUT here's the good stuff    We've got a new lawsuit in the County. Yum Yum
  • May 23 am  Coming back armed for action is none other than the rotund one, the Mayor of Ivydale, Wide Glide himself, Earnie Sirk ably aided by attorney of note, Jerome Novobilski.
  • May 23 am And who is the victim of the onslaught from the troublemaker? None other than our favorite, away from public scrutiny, social service provider, Clay Development Corp, CDC.
  • May 23 am After licking his wounds from the first thumpin in the courts where Sirk was his own attorney, the round one came back yesterday afternoon around 2 pm with Novobilski doing the paperwork , armed in a much more professional manner.
  • May 23 am This time around, none of the family clan, insider angled, and bickering stuff. Jerome left all that behind and went for the heart, the by laws of CDC. According to the paperwork filed, Jerome has discovered some real problems with the way the CDC handled the last general membership meeting where Earnie Sirk was tossed from power. The meeting that came on the heals of the firing of one of CDCs clan leaders.
  • May 23 am One time Czar of CDC, Sirk is alleging his removal was done contrary to by law requirements and seeks his spot back on the agency membership roles and the Board of Directors. He has also asked the courts to prevent the CDC from conducting any further business until a hearing and decision is made!
  • May 23 am  Who's Sirk going after? Who's getting served by the Sheriff's office? None other than CDC Executive Director Betty " No Stranger to the Courtroom" Stalnaker and Board members: Eunice Thomas, Peter Triplett, Gary Whaling, Reva Whaling, Sharon Mullins, Kathleen Morris, Jimmy Duffield, Janie Patterson, Della Rider, Teenie Taylor, Ralph Lane, Maxine Lane, and other unnamed individual Board members.  Just about everybody is named in the Petition for Injunction except Francis Sutton.
  • May 23 am No word yet on a hearing date. We'll keep you posted clickers.
  • May 23 am Sometime late tonight we'll provide the update on yesterday's County Commission and Clay Roane PSD meeting. And no, for some reason, our Solid Waster Authority did not meet as scheduled last night.
  • May 23 am One other note. Lynn Drake had a small camping trailer parked up on family land in the Northern end of the county. Sometime in the last few days, the trailer was stolen. The thieves even took the cinder blocks the rotten ole box was setting on! Drake is after the thugs and has given them a couple days to bring the property back to where it belongs. Drake is threatening to go sit on who ever took her trailer. Clickers, if you know who took the camper, warn them right away, no one would want Lynn Drake sitting on them!!! Be warned!
  • May 22 am Today at 2 our illustrious County Commissioners meet. Action will include a public hearing ( 2pm) on what Small Cities Block Grant $ to ask for; paying for fire department insurance in the county; and presentations  from the Clay County Bank and Bank of Gassaway on best deals for taxpayer funds.
  • May 22 am Around 6 pm our Solid Waste Authority meets on the top floor of the King Office complex on Main Street ( formally King Jewelry Store). With cash on hand, watch for some spending action
  • May 22 am Later at 7 pm today is the always fun to watch Clay Roane PSD meeting held at the CDC building on Main Street. Boardster Glen Sutton has asked for some secret time. Some residents that live near the Procious water plant are all up in arms after Clay Roane workers asked a select few in the area if they want water service and forgot to ask others. Should be fun.
  • May 22 am CCHS Dance team try outs, see ADVISORY page.
  • May 22 am  As a follow up to the scam going around over financial aid packages for college bound high school students, Yelp, got our first email from a MOM in the Bomont area of the county. Be ware clickers
  • May 22 am As a follow up to the street fight heard by scanner listeners last night. According to Magistrate Court records, the two arrested were  Jerry Cash II and Orville Hilderbrand who is being held behind bars on battery, obstructing on officer, and providing alcohol to a minor. Cash  was arrested on obstructing an officer and released on $1000 surety bond.  Piecing it together, sounds like, two drunks got into a fight in  front of the DHHR building, cops came, Cash ran in drunken circles until Tpr Bailey caught him. Later at the Courthouse, Hilderbrand made a dash for it but was caught at the bottom of the Courthouse steps.
  • May 22 am As an update on the recent fire at the Amma State Road garage, minor, something about the bathroom fan catching fire.
  • May 22 am The years of  free education have closed for Clay High seniors. They are free to go and multiply as they see fit.
  • May 22 am During Monday night's School Board meeting, Superintendent Jerry Linkinnoooooggggger said the SAT 9 scores are back. After much massaging and misfiguring, watch for yet another glowing report of stunning improvements in the near future. One of the neat tricks Clay ( as well as other counties) works: always refer to percentile scores instead of actual performance attained. Don't look for any indicators of areas needing improvement... that wouldn't look nice
  • May 22 am  Got a nice chocolate colored lab for sale over on the CLASSIFIED page. Earl Mc Cune is selling a dandy truck topper too.
  • May 21 am  We've got a scam going around the county. This one is targeting high school age students and gaining financial assistance for college. One of our readers who is also a college professor alerted us to this: "Special Invitation " from Edifi

  • about College Financial aid targeting 9th and 10th  graders. No real details or address, just a phone number.  I suspect others in the county received this invitation  as well.  This is basically a scam......  "... number of students who have received a letter  from an organization called Edifi College Financial Aid Services and asked to attend an informational meeting  regarding financial aid and college scholarships. At the end of the presentation, the organization offers to fill out financial aid forms and secure scholarships for students if the student/family pays an $800 fee. Please be aware that financial aid assistance is required to be
provided to students FREE of charge and there are many FREE resources available to students as they are filling out financial aid applications and applying for scholarships ..." It does not cost to apply for financial aid at colleges.
WVU-Tech, WVU, WV State, Glenville State,....  any of our state colleges will be happy to help students and families apply at no charge.
  • May 20 am And con artists are working the Clay Calhoun County areas. This one targets senior citizens with two men working  posing as contractors, force their way into a home and then burglarize the near defenseless seniors. For details ask Marlyn Starcher about his aunt's experience! From over in Calhoun County, click CON MEN AT WORK.
  • May 20 am  Yesterday evening around 6:10 Town Chief of Police Buckshot Butcher was seen tearing thru Two Run responding to a 911 call of a Cash and Keener subjects fighting on the back street of Clay. Dispatcher made some mention of a stabbing. Later last evening the two were still at the Magistrate's office awaiting their fate.
  • May 20 am Today at 1pm, Clay Development Corp will hold their monthly Board of Directors meeting beginning at 1 . Now open to the public.
  • May 20 pm Lets talk about important stuff. No not water, rain, war, or dumbarss politicians. Lets talk about FOOD.  We've got a new place to eat in Clayberry. Last friday evening Godfather's Pizza opened at Lizemore. The pizza end of the business is open from 11 to 8pm daily. Ed Blake from Fayetteville bought the old Exxon business there and added the Godfathers part. They also have a fresh Deli section to boot.
  • May 20 pm You might want to talk to Mr. Blake the next time he's in town, he owns a Taco Bell deal in other counties. Wouldn't that be nice to have close at hand!
  • May 20 pm Last night the Health dept. Board of Directors met. The meeting was originally scheduled for last Wed but was canceled due to lack of quarrel, I mean lack of quorum.
  • May 20 pm This one's for Ann A., during the Health Dept. meeting it was announced that Boardster Joretta Gray, who hasn't attended a meeting for over 9 months, is bailing out. Melody Reed will be her replacement after the County Commission  OKs the appointment. Also already bailed out, Kim Thomas. Ms Thomas lead the charge to get local employees under civil service protection. That change gave many employees a boost in $ and protection four years ago.
  • May 20 pm  Last night was pay raise time for all employees of the Health Dept. except for the four nurses that got HEFTY pay raises recently. As a result of the raises, the new year budget, approved last night as well, will be $6000.00 in the red.
  • May 20 pm The Health Dept. building roof has been leaking for years. Repeatedly Jack Fields has been on the flat roof dumping buckets of tar to stop the dripping.  The plan was to cough up $50,000 and replace the entire roof this Spring. Not going to happen since finding asbestos in the old roof covering. Instead, a roofing company will be covering the old junk with a new layer of protection and leave the asbestos  where it is.
  • May 20 pm  Tomorrow is the Clay Development Corp meeting (CDC) beginning at 1 pm. Should be fun and remember, the CDC meetings are once again open to the public. Thursday is the County Commission meeting at 2 as well as the Clay Roane gang meeting at 7 pm on May 22. Will post agenda items for those gatherings prior to event.
  • May 20pm Go get a good PIZZA for a change!!
  • May 19 am Hello Monday morning, does anyone think we'll see sunshine today? The car caravan leaves out at noon in route to Charleston to shoot all weathermen down there
  • May 19 am Late Sunday afternoon and heard over the scanner, a building at the State Road garage near the Amma exit of I 79 caught fire. By 7pm, 911 made the call to all surrounding fired departments to bring water. By 7:40 last night, the call came in, the fire was out and all responders could head back home. No word as of yet on how much damage or cause.
  • May 19 am Got something pretty cool to show you, no not the nude Florida beach either!  topozone offer nifty topographic maps of the entire country over the web. The following link is set for locations in Clayberry.  Once there you can go use the back button to refine your search for specific items.  Click THAT'S WHERE I LIVE
  • May 19 am So who was up last night running down the kids with loud mufflers? Buckshot and Deputy Rider. Time: 11:36 with a tan pick up heading toward Maysel with straight pipes.
  • May 19 am  Rain Rain Rain. Many around the county are still cleaning up after creeks came out of their banks during the annual wash them bottles, bags, and diapers down the Elk River Spring Rains.
  • May 19 am Today is Frank Fields funeral over at Wilson Funeral Home at 1pm. Fields was 95 years old at the time of his death Saturday and served as Sheriff back in the early 70's during a time when the county didn't even furnish a cruiser for the Sheriff or lone deputy, Johnny Wooooofter. Soon into Frank Fields first term of office, Clayberry got it's first brand new Plymouth cruisers, one blue, the other green. Also during his term in office, Clay County came into the real world with a breathalyzer and radar gun.
  • May 19 am Sheriff Frank Fields was the no nonsense type of professional that the crooks knew to pay attention to. Story goes that on several occasions, Fields would call up the bad guys or send word to them, to come on in. They did too. Today, another chapter of Clayberry history comes to a close.
  • May 19 am  Tonight is a School Board meeting , 6 pm, at Clay High. It'll be interesting to see if there is any discussion on how much time Scott Legg will be on the Graduation Ceremony stage. Seems the High School kids decided to have Buck Davis be the speaker for the exercises but with the School Board jawboneing a bunch, Mr Davis has been limited to just a few minutes.
  • May 19 am We'll keep you posted as the week goes along. Check back often and tell a friend.
  • May 18 am Frank Fields, see FUNERAL page
  • May 18 am Around the county locals are checking out their windows and doors to see if that little creek has turned into a dangerous raging ribbon of danger just waiting to destroy something. The rain continued all thru Saturday and Saturday night.
  • May 18 am In the way of a weekend wrap up, the word is rain. Seems like everyday this week, we saw either down pours and high wind or high wind and down pours.
  • May 18 am Johnny Woooofter was carted off to the hospital this week in the back of an ambulance. Our sidewalk superintendent made it out of there alive and said he had just gone in for an oil change and had the nurses check his valves while there.
  • May 18 am The Town of Clay received their recently donated Ford cruiser compliments of Clay Auto Parts.
  • May 18 am The Town of Clay election is heating up nicely. In Friday's edition of the Communicator came a paid political ad that should turn up the political flame to 350 degrees. Pick up a copy soon.
  • May 18 am The big talk around the political circles: Who do the big boys in Charleston want as Town Mayor and Council?  We now know, without their chosen ones in office, all the water line extension projects and plant upgrades are down the tubes.
  • May 18 am One guy explained it best this week. That guy said the big cheezes in Charleston don't want anybody in office up here. Instead, they just want to run the whole smear without any local input.
  • May 18 am As of late late Saturday night, we heard no car wrecks, or injuries relating to Clay High Prom activities. Good!
  • May 17 pm Of course Trick or Treat Night is the best night to listen to police scanners but tonight comes in a strong second. Tonight is PROM night for Clay High School kids. Today all the little girls are getting the nails done, hair rolled and curled, maybe one last trip to the tanning bed at Sally's,  maybe even one of those facial deals. For the pimple faced boys, get the car cleaned up, pick up the tux, beg Mom for extra $$, pick up the corsage, buy some condoms. Tonight is the night of dreams.
  • May 17 pm  For  County Cops, Prom night is a night of work. Don't forget to turn up the volume night on your scanner. If you're wanting to hear our 100 year old Sheriff's Dept., tune  460.125  When that drag race goes bad or some other stupid antic goes sour, listen to our ambulance service channel: 453.125
  • May 17 pm  Laurel Creek was stocked when some nice big trout Thursday May 15.  Even with all the heavy rains, Laurel is still pretty clear and nearly dry. Easy pickins for the angler this weekend.
  • May 16 pm  Hold your horses!!!!!!!!!!! The Communicator is NOT coming out until saturday morning. It's 20 pages of news and views and Not the usual hum drum 16. Sorry for the delay but it'll be worth it.
  • May 16 pm For those planing  to fish the Elk this weekend, forget it. The River is thick enough to plow. Forget the side waters too.
  • May 16 am  Go away rain! You've been around for a week straight it seems. The cabbage doesn't need another drop
  • May 16 am 150 years ago, here in Appalachia as well in Africa and elsewhere, last night's lunar eclipse would have brought out the drums and fires to ward off the evil spirits. Last night as the sky darkened, we continued to sit in front of the boob tube and be bored.
  • May 16 am Yesterday's mock disaster drill at Clay High was canceled due to ##!! rain
  • May 16 am For the most part, the rain held off long enough to get a double header in as Clay 13-14 year olds put it to Summersville. First game was secured with the 10 run rule! GO CLAY
  • May 16 am For those arrogant folks with DSL service from Citizen's Tele Co... bite me! DSL is still a dream in the Maysel area  and been on hold for months. COME ON CHUCK D. HELP US OUT!
  • May 16 am Clay County Schools catch on to playing a game real quick. Just a few weeks back we finished SAT 9 testing for the last time. So corrupted was the testing and results, the State School Board tossed the whole thing out and replaced the SAT 9 with a new measurement tool (Test) requiring some thinking.
  • May 16 am Yesterday, Clay students finished taking a practice test for the new and improved version which comes on line next year.  We just had to get a peek as did 51 counties in WV!
  • May 16 am  The Communicator should hit the news stands around 4 today. 20 pages, count them, 20 pages of action packed news and views found no where else. Front page is an interview with Ambulance Service Director Mitzie Adkins. We've also got the wrap up on the Tattoo Vince murder trial, the details on how the TOwn's June 10th Election may affect water service in both Clay and Roane Counties; and a whole bunch more for just 50 cents!!
  • May 15 am Roy Tom Wilkerson, see FUNERAL page.
  • May 15 am  Remember when cars were made of heavy steel, big chrome bumpers and such? Many seniors think those old cars are safer than the new light weight plastic things on the road today. Yesterday afternoon, 2:30pm, on Rt. 4, at the mouth of Elkhearst Rd, we can prove those ole timers wrong.
  • May 15 am A greenish colored GM car smashed into one of those new SUVs causing the SUV to roll at least a couple times and end up on its side in the middle of the road. The vehicle was totaled to say the least. Here's the news, the female driver and her 3 week old infant made it thru the wreck unharmed!.
  • May 15 am  Last night's Bd of Health Meeting was canceled due to lack of quorum ( lack of quarrel as we say here in Clayberry). The groups gazillion dollar state law mandated annual budget was to have been approved at the meeting along with other important stuff.
  • May 15 am Earlier in the day three Boardsters,  a quorum, said they were planning to attend. We're not sure which three that would have been but Joretta Gray hasn't attended a meeting in 9 months!
  • May 15 am  While discussin Dubbya's Oil war, had a guy say, " The war is over and we won big. Get over it!" Many in this county felt the war was wrong and merely  a grab by big business to gain Iraq's oil reserves. Now with Haliburton in charge of the sand, those desenters may have been right.
  • May 15 am Since 9/11 and since Ashcroft's reign of terror began,  there has been a steady decline in Constitutional rights along with a serious decline in the unbiased reporting of such in the mogul controlled media. Many of those that have spoken out against Dubya have been labeled communists and ostracized by friends and government alike. Tim Robbins spoke out on this subject at the Washington DC Press Club this month. His comments are now posted over on the ADVISORY page.
  • May 15 am  Fellows have you been good this year? Real good? Check out the nice V-8 inboard powered boat over on the CLASSIFIED page. Need some work? Can you do concrete work? Walk over to the CLASSIFIED page for details.
  • May 15 am Here it is Clayberry, Florida's Nude Beach. Ladies, this one is for you too!  To see for yourself, click Nice Ones!
  • May 15 am Looks around now. I bet everybody else at your school, or the courthouse, the library,  just viewed the same site you did. Gotcha
  • May 14 am Lets get some quickie stuff out of the way. This evening is the quarterly meeting of the Clay County Bd of Health.  Fairly light agenda with action beginning at 7 ( we think)
  • May 14 am  Want to know the key players and a brief background of each in the Gov. Wise got caught with his pants down saga? Click BACKGROUND
  • May 14 am  And of course there are the usual sharks circling about in the political waters of WV calling Gov. Wise Bob Clinton Wise. Click  SCALP HIM NOW
  • May 14 am Now back to Clayberry......
  • May 14 am  We've added new pictures from the HE White Ramp Feed and new stuff on the This and That sections of the PHOTO link, this site.
  • May 14 am How about it Ivydale residents? Is Superintendent Linkinnnoooooggger doing the right thing by closing the door to buying the land right beside Ivydale Elem., the Douglas property? The plan has always been to close down your school and promises have been made to build  another school somewhere else. BUT with finances as they are, what's the chances for such anytime soon? $20,000 is pretty cheap for the five lot parcel. Wouldn't a larger playground be nice for your kids?
  • May 14 am Poop was floating around Clay's Primary Health Clinic yesterday as sewers backed up big time. Calls came in to Town Hall for help.
  • May 14 am We'll print Clay Roane PSd's newly approved $344,200.00 operating budget in this Friday's Communicator. When you look real close, things don't appear to realistic. One such area is in the amount of water to be purchased from the Town of Clay. If our ciphering adds up, they plan to purchase more water than the pumps can pump. Also this Friday are the salaries of the Clay Roane PSD operation.
  • May 14 am  Also in the next edition is Clay County PSD's 2003-2004, $257,568.00 budget.
  • May 14 am Looks like the June 10th Town election is about to heat up. We've got a dandy paid political ad for Friday's edition that is pretty durn eye opening.
  • May 13 am How often do we hear stuff like this," I apologize deeply to the people of the state for my actions.... I believe in accountability......  I was not faithful to my family..." Those are some of the words from Gov. Bob Wise as his extra marital affair became public yesterday. For our international clickers, here's the entire story from the Charleston Daily Mail, click PANTS DOWN
  • May 13 am  An apology and Poof, all OK.
  • May 13 am Don't miss this morning's Clay County PSD meeting which begins at 10am in the basement of the old Courthouse.
  • May 13 am Mark your calendars for this Thursday night between 9:15 and 11pm. We got a full  eclipse of the moon. Get out away from the boob tube and catch the action on you front porch.
  • May 13 am Our Clay's Junior League baseball team is off to a great start this year. Last night the 13 - 14 year olds put it all over the Braxton County team 24 to 2. Ever hear of three outs in one play? Happened last night. Braxton on 1st, Braxton on third. Pop Up. 3rd baseman Jesse snags it ( that's the first out) as the guy on first heads to 2nd. With the guy standing on 2nd and making no attempt to go back to 1st, Jesse throws to first, out #2. Guy on third tries to make it home. Didn't happen as 1st baseman Trinity accurately throws home. Out # 3. Now that's the way to shorten an inning on a cold rainy Monday night!
  • May 13 am We've got some parents in the county  mad over the school system not informing them when serious health issues hit the schools. Scarlatina is the scare now. According to medical dictionaries, Scarlatina is an acute, contagious, childhood bacterial disease and is more commonly known as Scarlet Fever and is contagious for two weeks after an outbreak. Even on less serious stuff like head lice and pink eye, rarely are notices given parents in many of Clayberry's Elem. schools.
  • May 12 am Greetings early morning clickers around the world. Here in Clayberry and in surrounding counties, we've has one heck of a weekend of heavy down pours and flooding on Saturday followed by 60 mile an hour winds on Sunday.
  • May 12 am In less than a month, we'll know who our next Town Mayor and Council will be. Around Town, little campaign cards are showing up on bulletin boards and printed signs as well for Glen Nichols who's running for mayor. Incumbent Arthur Jarrett is handing out white campaign hats while Council person Sally Legg is starting to put up some small but colorful posters.
  • May 12 am  Last night the Clay Middle School Band made it back from the Pittsburgh weekend trip around 11pm. All safe and no reports of major problems. Seems the hit of the weekend was the trip to Kennywood amusement park where roller coasters with 100 foot drops were the rage.
  • May 12 am  Something's going on at Elvis Dawson's home. Over the last several years Dawson has erected big plywood signs in his front yard proclaiming the ill worth of Mary Starcher. Two weeks ago, the long standing feud between Elvis and Davis Starcher turned bloody with a gunshot wound to Starcher.
  • May 12 am If you drive by Dawson's home now, the signs have all been changed. Now painted in blues are patriotic themes of supporting the troops. Is the feud over?  Don't count on it. We'll keep you posted
  • May 11 am  If your Mother is still with you, go kiss her, hug her, tell her you love her. For those that have passed on, today is  a day to remember. Those reflections often include a tear for words that were never spoken to the woman that made us possible.
  • May 11 am Before the weekly wrap-up, yesterday, storms raced thru the county with  the Elk and tributaries rising ever so fast. Near Big Otter, car wrecks with the roadway covered with backed up water in several places. Ducks were seen paddling on the water covered roads.
  • May 11 am The Town's nearly new police car complete with blue lights, made it town Saturday. The vehicle, a loaner from Clay Auto Parts and Fluharty Motors, is a loaner for now.
  • May 11 am  Also before the wrap up, we've got another candidate for next year's Sheriff race. Roger Hunt , lives near the Camp Creek bridge, announced his intentions to run. Hunt, who has years of big city police background and business skills out the whazoo, was told, there's no place for that kind of background in Clay County politics!
  • May 11 am OK, for the week that was...
  • May 11 am Over in school system land, the many trips to the zoo, ball games, etc. continued. Since completing the SAT 9 tests a couple weeks back, for all intents and purposes, school is out for another year
  • May 11 am Over in School Board land, next year's school calendar is up for grabs. During the Board meeting no vote was taken. Absent Scott Legg was needed to make a tie vote for Board Chair RB to break the tie.
  • May 11 am During the CAEZ meeting last Tuesday old dirt was plowed up as a newbee asked about Harpeth Industries. Remember Harpeth? Harpeth received  1/2 million in state, local, economic development, and CAEZ bucks several years back. Harpeth disappeared overnight, another dismal failure and  big one too, leaving all lenders out on the limb and penniless!
  • May 11 am More details on the grizzly death of Judd Reid came out after Vince Golosow was pronounced guilty of first degree murder. Stuff like, after killing Reid, and after dumping the body on Pisgah Ridge and during the ride back to Murder Mountain, Golosow licked the drying Reid blood from his hands.
  • May 11 am Arson continued unchecked this week in Clayberry as State Officials sent in the investigators for the trailer fire near the Hartland bridge
  • May 11 am It became known during the Clay Roane PSD meeting, the future of the Amma Left Hand project is contingent on the Town of Clay election  to be held this June 10. Since Mayor Arthur Jarrett is known to take and give cussing fits every time WV PSC engineer Jim Weimer's name is mentioned, it appears that the state folks want tried and true Glen Nichols and slate back in office. Since Sally Legg, Wanda Chambers and Betty Murphy consistently vote against throwing away a perfectly good, paid for, water plant and consistently fight the many absolutely dumb sh!! ideas and lies presented by the WV PSC ( Hello Jim W) , those three may be on the black ball list for Council.
  • May 11 am And of course we sure can't let this weekly wrap up go by without mentioning an early in the week post concerning Sarah Anderson's resignation from the WVU Extension office staff. Anderson is heading off to college land this fall. Talk about a simple little post that created a stir.  Let's see know.. resign, leave, quit, give notice, leaving... or well, yes, bail out that's what we called it.
  • May 11 am Keep your powder dry if you can, let the grass grow, and kiss your Mother for us at Delta Communications. See you Monday morning
  • May 10 am  Donald L Hamrick, see FUNERAL page
  • May 10 am Last night Clayberry got lucky. Severe weather warnings were posted and some wind howled but little else. It's time for the weekend. Have some fun!
  • May 10 am When you see Senator Randy White today, tell him HAPPY NAVAL DAY . Yelp, the day he got his belly button, his birthday!
  • May 10 am We'll add  pictures to the SPRING 2003 picture page thru next week. We've got over 40 entries already posted.  The This and That section of the PHOTO page will be added to thru >
  • Transfer interrupted!

  • May 10 am State Arson investigators were back in the county Friday morning as yet another home, this time a trailer, went up in flames, just past the Hartland bridge.  With torchings coming on a regular basis, it may be cheaper on the tax payer for them to set up a local office.
  • May 10 am There's always room for  a JD Morris posting. Morris is remembered by many as  a basketball ref in his younger days. Now lodged in prison, Morris has been wearing the striped shirt for prison league games. Last week, while calling a game , a fall put a gash on Morris' head.
  • May 10 am Of course, we'll have the complete run down in the next Communicator but until then, one more note from the last Clay Roane PSD gathering. During Thursday night's meeting, motion was made and passed to pay some of the overdue and some of the ready to be cut off bills including, water purchases from Town of Clay ($3735); PEIA ($2939) and all ready cut off, Hughes Supply. The motion to pay bills came not with $ in hand but rather in anticipation of $17,000.00 due from customers early next week.
  • May 10 am Also last Thursday, our County Commission met in regular session. With a little more money to work with this year, CCC voted to cover janitor costs ( over $600) for the Apple Festival plus cough up $1000 for fireworks. Apple Festival volunteer Danny Sizemore reported that there will NOT be a July 4th Celebration this year mentioning that a carnival ride company was not available.
  • May 10 am All local water providers (PSDs) were suppose to attend the CCC meeting and provide an update on water projects. Only Clay County PSD showed.  As for the Clay PSD report, things are moving along like a herd of turtles. Several more customer agreements have to be completed before the Lizemore, Fola, Tucker's Bottom extensions can go to bid.
  • May 10 am Our part time ( $1500/month) 911 Director Dave King has been in hot water in his native Nicholas County over poor performance during the last ice storm back in March. Over there several have asked for his resignation. Instead, the Nicholas Commission has plans to hire King an assistant. King showed for the Thursday Clay County Commission meeting to discuss years of delays ( not King's fault) in getting new 911 addresses for this county.  Did you know you can't buy a firearm without a new 911 address on your driver's license? A PO box number won't work clickers. Even more complaints have been coming in over difficulty getting a drier's license! No 911 address, no license!
  • May 10 am Of course, one has to wonder if they will give Robert C Bird any static when he goes after his driver's license. Bird uses a PO Box in Sophia as his WV address, no house , no nothing else, just a post office box. Several years back, Sen Bird commented that he couldn't afford a house in WV and maintain his home in DC.
  • May 10 am This one for those of you with kids at Ivydale Elem. Think your school is safe from closure?
  • May 10 am  Right beside the school is an older home which is up for sell at a real cheap price. In addition to the house and three lots squished up against the school, the property includes two river fronting lots. Many school kids play behind the house now. The property has been offered to the school system. When this was brought to you know who's attention, the answer was NO, we want that school closed.
  • May 10 am OF course our spelling ain't for beans either BUT in this week's edition of that little paper over in Clay this headline:  HUMAN SOCIETY ASKS FOR DONATIONS. Since the article dealt with getting cages, dog houses and such, we think they meant to say HUMANE
  • May 10 am After taking in the big Bluegrass Show at Big Otter this afternoon, head on up to Marlyn Starcher's Saturday night auction in Braxton County, tight behind the fire dept. For complete details, head over to all home page and click MDS auctions.
  • May 10 am  We'll post a weekend wrap up sometime Sunday. Thanks for stopping by.
  • May 9 pm The sun's a shining, the temps are up and the hope around Clayberry is, the winds will blow the rain clouds away. We'll keep our fingers crossed anyway. Big ball game planned for this evening , 6 pm, the Junior League game at RT Sizemore Memorial Park at Maysel.
  • May 9 pm  Yesterday's Commission and Clay Roane PSD meetings were dandy. Lots of good info came forth. As a note, it will probably take us a couple days to cover just the highlights of the action. Come back late tonight for Commission meeting pos>
  • Transfer interrupted!

May 9 pm In a May 7 posting below, we had a one liner .. something along the lines of WVU Extension Office manager Sarah Anderson is bailing out. Boy talk about raising a stink. Got several phone calls including one from Sarah's Mother Ann and a comment from WVU Agent Shamblin that the post looks bad and causes problem.  While it is true she is bailing out, it appears that some may have preferred the use of "resigning" instead of "bailing out". Truth is, Ms Anderson is bailing out to attend college on a full time basis in the fall. Without a doubt.  the best decision Sarah has  made in her life! As for the peed off folks, lighten  up, get a grip!
  • May 9 pm  Don Samples has a big long list of items on the CLASSIFIED page, this site. Just added.
  • May 9 pm Mark your calendars for Saturday's Twangy First Century Bluegrass Show up at Big Otter Community Center. The local non profit radio station (CLAY FM) hopes to raise some $ from the event. With four high school kids already working there, and plans to get on the FM air this summer, they need all the help they can get. See EVENTS page for details.
  • May 9 pm  Now for the opening tidbits from the Clay Roane PSD meeting  held last night.  Of course, they're still in financial quagmire. Something interesting came up during discussion of the water line extension project which will mostly serve Roane County, the one known as Amma/Left Hand extension. Are you reading this Town of Clay? Someone print this off and read it to Mayor Arthur Jarrett!   How about you still drinking frog pee and waiting for water service?   Here it is: PSD Engineer Jim Hildruth said that even if all the rights of way agreements were signed and all the T's were crossed, he felt the big boys with the money, WOULD NOT ALLOW THE LONG STALLED PROJECT TO GO TO BID UNTIL AFTER THE TOWN OF CLAY ELECTION in June.
  • May 9 pm All right everybody, one great big Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm..
  • May 9 pm   Until after the election? ... there has been speculation for months, maybe years, that something was lurking in the background, something unknown to the public.  We've heard rumors that Clay County PSD and Clay Roane PSD BOTH want to build their own high dollar water plants and get as far away from the Town of Clay water supply as possible. The County Commission has even provided Clay County PSD $5000 to do such a study for a new water source.
  • May 9 pm At one point during the discussions, Boardster Larry White asked if the Amma Left Hand project was dead in the water. The response was NO.
  • May 9 pm Until after the election? What does that mean. We got just an inkling later in the discussion when Hildruth said the lenders want somebody in Town leadership that supports the projects and will work with them. Under further questioning, Mr. Hildruth waffled and ducked with a sheepish grin. Waffled and ducked?  and rightly so!
  • May 9 pm Until after the election? So if the current team headed by King Arthur gets back in, is that who lenders want? Or is it the slate with Glen Nichols at the helm and past Mayor Joyce Gibson at his side? Just a couple years back, Ms Gibson peed off many local thinkers as she stood 100% in lock step with what the WV PSC wanted. When Glen Nichols ascended to the Mayor throne, his vote was the tie breaking vote to give away a perfectly good water plant and get the Town out of the water AND sewer business?
  • May 9 pm The truth is , the WV Public Service Commission, WV PSC, has much less control over a municipality than they do over a Public Service District. Town leaders proved that time in and time out. As the current administration. Big Murph, Chambers, Legg, and later, Jarrett, fought the take over attempts, fought to stop a high dollar regional water plant, fought higher water rates, and fought less desirable reorganization plans brought to the table by the WV PSC, they made enemies. They peed off many of the back door planners to put the County so deep in debt that economic development could never happen.
  • May 9 pm OK Readers, send in your emails, in your opinion, who do the Big Boys want in charge of the County's only municipality? Who do THEY think would be better for their efforts. Also, what does it mean to the 13 million dollars in water projects for the county... are they gone?  Get it off your chest now. 'Will only take a few minutes. Use the email link below.
  • May 8 am Hello America. Here in the Great Nation of Clay tiny apples are forming on the limbs, the first rose buds are starting to pop open, radishes are ready to eat, the rain may stop today. The best of all, County Commission meets at 2pm followed by Clay Roane PSD at 7 pm.  Oh Boy!
  •  May 8 am The Commission (CCC) agenda has lots of little things that could add to an action packed fun time.   Stuff like: the Apple Festival wanting $; an update on the long  long stalled water extension projects around the county; Brent Boggs with a problem over a piece of property he sold to past Deputy John McKown; and, an update from in deep stuff in Nicholas County 911 Director Dave King. Over in his home county King has been the subject of much debate and some  in t he emergency services community have asked for his resignation.
  • May 8 am  Make space for a secret time during the CCC meeting too. They want to get their heads together, away from the public, to discuss the lawsuit against them.  Be sure to drop by the Courthouse today around 2 for some free fun!
  • May 8 am  Some of the best entertainment in the county over the last 10 months or so has been Clay Roane PSD meetings. At times, last year it appeared fights were ready to break out. At other times, the actions and mentality of the Board would make most people cry. The PSD meets in the CDC building on Main Street at 7 pm. Come early to get a good seat.
  • May 8 am THINGS I HAVE LEARNED:     I've learned that you cannot make someone love you.      All you can do is stalk them and hope they panic and give in. I've learned that no matter how much I care, some people are just butt holes.
  • May 8 am  THINGS I HAVE LEARNED:   I've learned that you can't compare yourself to others - they are more screwed up than you think.      I've learned that you can keep puking long after you think you're finished.     I've learned that we are responsible for what we do, unless we are celebrities.
  • May 8 am  THINGS I HAVE LEARNED:   I've learned that regardless of how hot and steamy a relationship is at first, the passion fades, and there had better be a lot of money to take its place.      I've learned  that no matter how many times somebody tells me to have a nice day, it's still none of their D@@!  business what kind of day I have.
  • May 8 am With the Town's police cruiser blown up, it looks like our county good corporate partner, Clay Auto Parts, is providing one for the county's only municipality.  Might be here for C.O.P. Buckshot Butcher's weekend rounds.
  • May 8 am Just added a nice sounding river front house and great big pull behind camper over on CLASSIFIED page.
  • May 7 pm Just a couple more notes about Tuesday's CAEZ meeting. First, Clay has had a beef for years over the amount of money spent in other counties served by CAEZ instead of the money staying here. Over a year ago Braxton County Commissioner John Gibson told the world, he was laying the ground work for his county for when money becomes available thru CAEZ. Well........... CAEZ has a new micro loan program which offers business loans up to $15,000.00.  Guess where the first loan went? Yip! Steve's Auto in Sutton, Braxton County. Gibson lived up to his word. There's $30,000 left to loan and another $100,000.00 expected in July. What you waiting for Clayberry?
  • May 7 pm And second from the CAEZ meeting. Who would have ever thought tourists from all over would want to come to our Southern coal fields for a vacation. It's happening now on the Hatfield/McCoy ATV trail. One of the very first things the group did to promote their area was.... of course, a web site! 6 years ago, as our Business Development Authority was getting started, a name (claytoday.com) was purchased and high school kids set up a site for this county. It lasted about 3 months and then died. To check out how the coal boys are generating interest in one of the most raped areas of the state , click THEY DONE IT, WHY NOT US?
  • May 7 am  Dollie Lyons, see FUNERAL page
  • May 7 am Carl Triplett, see FUNERAL page
  • May 7 am Town Chief of Police is having a hard time keeping his wheels rolling. The Town's white Ford SUV Cruiser blew up, cracked head and more. If anyone can loan Buckshot a bicycle, please leave it at Town Hall please.
  • May 7 am Long time WVU Extension office manager Sarah Anderson is baling out.
  • May 7 am Make plans now to attend Saturday's "Twangy First Century" Bluegrass Show up at Big Otter Community Center. One of the groups coming, Bluegrass Harmony was heard a couple weeks back on WV Public Radio. Sounded pretty darn good. See EVENTS page for details
  • May 7 am  Central Appalachia Empowerment Zone (CAEZ) met in regular session Tuesday evening at 6 pm. It was the usual fair, blah blah blah with a couple of exceptions. 1- CAEZ hired a new lady to work on getting an ATV trail (similar to the Hatfield/McCoy Trail) thru Clay and Nicholas Counties. Time will tell if the usual walls will be put up with this latest tourism idea. Traditionally, if the existing powers that be in Clayberry can't make a fist full of dollars, then they're against anyone else making the $.  2- The Filcon Inc. filter equipment is now stored over in Roane County in the Clay Roane PSD building. Now this was just ever so briefly mentioned but... the Roane County Sheriff is getting involved with t he holdings. CAEZ Director Jerry Sizemore said the High Cop " has been very helpful."
  • May 7 am   Why do we say something is out of whack? What's a whack?
  • May 7 am   Why is the man who invests all your money called a broker?
  • May 6 pm Yesterday after five days of court dealings, a jury of his peers found Vince Golosow GUILTY of first degree murder. Since the defense raised major issues repeatedly over Fourth Amendment issues of illegal search and seizure, watch for an appeal for sure.
  • May 6 pm Last Sunday a young man was spotted heisting a little boxer dog from a vehicle in the Dollar Store parking lot in Clay. After the owner was alerted of the thievery, she high tailed it down the street and chased down the  thug. After rescuing her pup, the Blue Knob lady smacked the bejeebeez out of the man. She really CASHed in on the situation.
  • May 6 pm Last night's school board meeting was one of those our Superintendent hates. Parents showed. The issue for the Truman Family was preferential treatment given some Clay High students. The discussion centered around a shoving incident where the "shover" received  time in ALC instead of getting kicked out. CCHS VP Jim Haney said it was Connie Schoonover that suggested the discipline and he just followed her direction. As Board Chair RB Legg was saying the shoving incidents at the High School were rare, parent Truman retorted what Principal Cindy Willis had told him," If all the shovers in the school were put in ALC, there'd be no one left in class." Boardster Gene King even got a little riled up during the meeting.
  • May 6 pm THIS AND THAT: Pretty cool discussion during the meeting and Yes, they made it official, Mike Mullins will be the new Principal at Ivydale Elem. No decision made on next year's school calendar. Seems the Teachers want one schedule and the bus drivers, all of them, want an alternative. Yesterday was Senior Skip Day at CCHS. Lots of kids bailed out.
  • May 6 pm  In  Norman Oklahoma, May 4, at Wal Mart, regular gas was $1.99 per gallon.
  • May 6 pm This afternoon at 4, Clay Town Council meets in regular session. On the agenda is the plan to take a while bunch of water customers to Magistrate Court in an attempt to recover long overdue water bill $
  • May 6 pm Tonight at 6 is the CAEZ meeting. CAEZ Meets two doors down from the historic Henry Clay Hotel.
  • May 6 pm Based on recent public meetings ( about 6 years worth to be exact), we know Clay Roane PSD is in deep financial doo doo. We also know that it is cheaper for Clay Roane to purchase water from the Town of Clay than to make it in their Procious Water Plant facility. Last month Clay Roane purchased just 32,000 gallons from the town, the least amount since March 2001. The cost for the 32000 gallons was $962.00.  The Town charges $2.61 per 1000 gallons purchased while the cost to make/treat water at Clay Roane is well over $4.50 per 1000 gallons. Is it any wonder Clay Roane PSD is loosing money daily?
  • May 5 pm Where is the most expensive place to buy gas today? San Fransisco at $1.99 per gallon on average. What's the national average for a gallon of gasoline? • May 3 am Just a couple years back, Laura Baker from TV 8 came to Clayberry to provide news coverage of the John Helms getting tossed out of school for no good reason issue. The Board meeting was held in the basement of Valley Fork Grade School. With the room packed, Baker entered with a camera man at her side.
  • May 3 am Big tough Board President RB Legg went over to Baker and told her he didn't allow filming during Board meetings. With probably the best come back lines ever heard, the tall thin lady yelled out," Is there a newspaper reporter here?" With a Yes response heard, Baker," Then are you going to take his pencil and paper???"
  • May 3 am  With his tail solidly tucked up his butt, Legg slinked away and heard the hotly contested meeting as the cameras rolled. Mollahan recently made Clay Magistrate Jeff Boggs news and is now in the CEntral Regional Jail. Mollahan told the judge that while Vince was housed just a few cells away, Vince slipped him notes. The notes asked Mollahan to lie in the court room and say the victim committed suicide. With one note in hand, and after repeated objections from defense attorney Leah Boggs, Judge Thomas Evans allowed the hand written letter information.

  • May 2 pm Here's one to think about, especially all of us that have labeled Vince guilty from the get go....
